Nascar in the sky. As a child in the 60s we would go to Ryan Airport and watch the Blue Angels. Back then, guardrails were off and I well remember that the main formation would get your attention while a 'bogey' would sneak in from the back with a very low and fast flyover. That puts one on the 'battlefield'. I think that was their point.
Those guys are the best of the best.
I am truly philosophically torn between my total respect, admiration and worship of the Competitive Principle in regard to Humanity's rise from the Natural World ("The Creature", in Bible speak), and the brick wall that we hit when the Power of Knowledge is applied in Military enterprise.
Amazing any way one cuts it.

And I hear you have to arrive really early, or you get stuck in a mile long car line on those days.
It was awesome seeing the joint flyover this past weekend. You can see how big those Super Hornets really are next to the F-16s. Sure wish (perhaps futilely) the T-birds would switch to Strike Eagles.

I believe it is Tuesday/Wednesday this year. Target/Aldi parking lot in Pensacola always has some local folks parked and watching.

I get to watch them from my buddy's beach house sitting in his pool, drinking margaritas. We usually go on Thursday and see all 3 days of flying. It's one of the best experiences ever!

I wish I could touch the stick in one of those. I’ve been told they have a 40lb spring installed on the stick to make it easier to be more precise. Flying the ILS in a 172 at 90kts with some play in the cables really sucks lmao.

Can you see the maneuvers from there? I was sort of thinking Ft. Pickens might be a good spot, but it’s kind of far from the flight line. One thing for certain, I will NEVER attend the Pensacola air show. I watched it online last summer and that’s just way too crowded for the beach. Plus, you can’t really go in the water (rightfully so) to cool off. What people endure to see that show is borderline OCD.

The Netflix doc on Blue Angels is pretty good. They have diff call outs for how tight they will fly in formation. The cockpit shots as they are in formation is insane. They have their eye on one part of one jet and nothing else and listen to the cadence of the lead. As they gel and get better that distance shrink.
They fly a lot tighter than Thunderbirds and always have, but I like the F-16 better and enjoy the T-birds just as much. Back in the early 80's the T-birds were flying T-38's and because they only watch the lead or the slot and follow them, the formation was doing a loop and the lead was too low and the all flew in the ground.
