‘Like walking a tightrope’: Black women are sick and hurt from getting overlooked, reduced at work

As a Black female professional, everything from your intelligence, demeanor and appearance can be perceived as “intimidating.”

One Black woman’s tale of being overlooked at work struck a nerve among theGrio family and reawakened the age-old discussion of discrimination in the workplace. Cue the collective deep, exhausted Negro spiritual sigh.

Clocking into work as a Black woman, whether in-person or virtually, can feel like going into battle. Black employees, but especially Black female employees, are forced to face the natural challenges that come with any job while simultaneously dodging waves of microaggressions and stereotypes, hitting the proverbial glass ceiling, and more.

As author Regina Lawless describes it, being a Black woman in the workplace “is like walking a tightrope.” Lawless is also the founder of Bossy & Blissful, an organization working to help high-achieving Black women have intentional and sustainable success at work and at home,

She said she uses the tightrope description “because you have a very narrow path that you can walk and any false move in a direction can leave you exposed. In those environments, the white male leaders are the archetype for what leadership is. And so, as a Black woman, you’re not only having to fight against the stereotype of [being] a woman, so you’re not thought of as leadership potential in most cases,” she explained. “[But also] you’re battling the stereotypes of you have to be dominant and forceful. But of course, if you’re too dominant and forceful, particularly as a Black woman, that works against you because of the negative stereotypes of us being angry or aggressive.”

Black women are more often than not, difficult to deal with. If black women were universally sweet, agreeable etc, people would love working with them

:blah blah blah:

If you are a black woman and halfway competent, you tend to get a massive amount of opportunities.

If you are good at your job, you tend not to get shite from people nor do you have a chip on your shoulder claiming to be slighted when someone gives you “micro aggressions.”

If you are insecure enough they you read problems into every interaction, the problem isn’t other people it is you.

That does it. This just put me over the top. It has become clear.

Racism is existential. White supremacy is real.

How could we ever doubt any of this again?

LOL!

Why are you so ready to believe one whinny person. Did you ever consider that she is a worthless employee? Or does it not fit your agenda?

Let's be honest. This is all about, "Beauty Standards." The black woman inside is always seething because they are generally at the bottom of the attractiveness scale. It's the same with the frumpy, dykish, middle-aged, overweight, lesbians that are everywhere. They want everyone to be as miserable as they are.

The word "stereotype" exists for a reason. Take the necessary steps to make it go away. There's no butler to deliver it on a silver platter.

Examples:
• Hold yourself accountable.
• Practice and embrace the concept of "Excellence".
• Stop portraying yourself as a victim.
• Learn the value of self-discipline and virtue.
• Stop growing up being a color.

BULLfrickINGSHIT!!!

Employers have to walk on egg shells around black women.

Other employess have to very careful not to "offend" them, especially in government jobs.

Black women are most often found in jobs where they are wholly unqualified. They were hired or promoted there simply because, "black woman".

In government jobs there is a thing that is not spoken out loud. It is called "Black Woman Stupid". It is only whispered. It is the pinnacle of stupidity. You have never seen stupid to it's maximum potential, until you meet a stupid black woman. The irony is, the more stupid they are, the more convinced that they are smarter than everyone else around them.

Fani Willis is a great example of 'Black Woman Stupid'. When pushed on the witness stand. She went straight ghetto. This always their first reaction to having the stupid exposed.

A black woman could shite in the floor and punch three fellow employees, but can't be fired without screams of "RACISM".

Well yeah.. coworkers are probably extra careful when dealing with black women because they fear being labeled a racist or discriminatory.

Black guys? For the most part... They will get fired if they don't do their job.

Black women? I've seen too many situations where black women refused to do their job, and instead of getting fired, they just get transferred to another store.

Example. One of my nephews works at food lion. A black female coworker would clock in at 8am(scheduled to clock in at 7am)...and then leave the store 10 minutes later, she would stay gone until around 4pm..and then clock out. Everyone knew it. The management knew what was going on, but no one criticized her, let alone fire her. Instead, corporate just moved her to another store.

I have not ever had a problem with a black woman. Heck, I get along with all women.

Corporate America is literally falling all over themselves to hire black women, promote black women and use them for corporate PR and advertising. No matter what, it's never enough though... and never will be, apparently.
