On election night in 1992, I attended a function that would probably be called a cocktail party, at the home of a lawyer friend and his wife. Probably 30 people were present, all either lawyers under the age of 30 or their spouse/SO. The crowd was approximately an even split between supporters of Bush and Clinton. We arrived as friends, and we left as friends.

Looking at the current political climate, I wonder if that cocktail party could even take place today.

A bunch of lawyers standing around a room pretending to like each other? Yeah. That could happen today.

Probably not. When 1 group has consistently called the other group racist, sexist, etc for over 10 years, it tends to make that not want to be near the other. Libs have lost their damn minds.

Depends. If it were people who you know I would hope so, but there is one party who has a significant number of the adherents convinced the other side is evil and trying to end the world. There are so many radical, screeching democrats who simply at the site of a person wearing a hat freak out that I am not sure around a political event such as an election it would be wise to "mix" company.

Among conservatives, moderates and anyone that could pass for a liberal in 1992, yes it could absolutely happen. If the current version of liberals are thrown in the mix all bets are off though.

To me, it's always a good idea to always carry two sacks of something when you walk around. That way, if anybody says, "Hey, can you give me a hand?," you can say, "Sorry, got these sacks."

I was at The Caterie, listening to a buddy of mine play.

Baton Rouge folks...remember The Caterie? Coolest spot in town.

I went to business school in Boston about 12 years ago, pretty sure I’d be expelled if I went today.

I'm not around very many folks on the left anymore. Over the past 3 or 4 years, NONE of them have been able to hide their disgust over Trump. It is irrational, white noise level of hatred that actually disables them.

I didn't like the last guy. I was always very careful to lead with positives and follow the old adage, "If you can't say something nice..." and so forth.

I'm not saying there aren't irrational, hate-filled people on the right and maybe I can't see them because we're largely in agreement, but from my perspective, civility is gone from large swaths of the left.

One of the best bars of all time. I truly loved that old dump of a place.

I find no civility at all - unless the conversation is completely sterile.

I have not one acquaintance on the left who I can speak with about anthill but the weather. We used to kid each other about whatever the latest 'political' nonsense was going on.

Now it is absolute, unbridled hatred.

When subjects go to politics, I absolutely destroy them...
They just repeat shite spewed out by corporations...that they claim to despise, hilarity often ensues...

Ex, the claim that Trump made fun of a mentally retarded guy (these people can't even say the word "retarded", theytreat it like dropping an "nbomb" in public)
I smoked a dude on that issue, guy didn't even know the dude just was born with a deformed hand...

In the conversation, he said "duh"...I pointed out the origins of that word is ACTUALLY MAKING FUN OF MENTALLY RETARDED PEOPLE...

This poor bastard was ready for suicide after I started peeling back the layers of lies he was told...

Yes, quite. I would certainly called it a cocktail party if he were to serve drinks with top shelf alcohol and if the bar was staffed by a professional bartender who was a virgin with pert 32C breasts. Then again I suppose this is what happens when you graduate last in your class you can't afford such luxuries.

We live in a hyper partisan society. So if that’s your point, I agree.

Having said that, your example is probably the single worst example you could have found. If there was ever a time for people with different political perspectives choosing to be with their “own kind” it would be at a gathering on election night.

And you're old as hell, CB.

I mean, you remember the Civil Rights movement, the 68 assassinations, Nixon, etc.
