He got taken to task by "lion Ted" during the TX debate and wouldn't even show up or agree to a reschedule when Ted was in DC for a second one. Now imagine that on a national scale, against an incumbent Trump with an "attack dog" mentality in debates. It would be a bloodbath.

Beto May have nice packaging, but his record and history is dogshit
He would gutted by the Dems before he ever got in front of Trump, no way they let that carpetbagger get in their way of the big prize
The DNC would have to endorse him and that would splinter the Bernie Bros and the Socialist Dems from the moderates that are left in the party
Beto tried to be leftist for the radicals and moderate for the never trumpers and it didn’t work, if he can’t beat an unlikable Cruz he ain’t winning a shot at the top

Donald Trump has a higher unfavorability in Texas than Cruz does. He also has a higher favorability than Cruz so it’s hard to make much of Cruz’s unpopularity.
I can tell you that Beto won more votes in Texas during a midterm than Hillary won in a presidential year.
Hillary lost by 9 and Beto lost by 2.5
The Dem needs to less than a point better in PA, WI, and MI to flip the election.
If Beto wins the Dem primary, he’ll beat Trump.
