probably not responsive to the OP's question - When Reagan was CA governor, the state was at the apex of its economic health and was truly a destination - FL is doing well with DeSantis - Walker was great for WI - TX has a good one with Abbott - Noem in SD is solid.

EWE is the worst. Stole everything that wasn't nailed down.

Jindal was a first round draft bust, but he was just a missed opportunity whereas EWE actively caused harm.

Zell Miller. Democrat, back when Democrats were actually more like Republicans in the South.

People who say this are historically ignorant.

Nothing will ever top Huey Long, who did so much to completely institutionalize a culture of corruption and anti-business mindset that Louisiana has never recovered from and still plagues it to this very day.

I did too. Could not vote for him in 95, but did in 99. He triggered a butthurt HS lib teacher of mine, who always pushed Amnesty International on us, with his comment about the death penalty [paraphrasing]:

Debate Moderator to Foster: Do you support the death penalty for convicted killers?

Foster to Debate Moderator: Hell yea I do! And I think we ought to fry more of 'em!!

God, that teacher was such a pussy. Can only imagine how bad he got when Trump was elected.

I really don't know the answer but the question should be what didn't they do. They didn't abuse their power. They didn't interfere in my every day life with idiotic mandates and decrees. They didn't interfere with my rights as an individual and if they did anything it was remove some of the bloated bureaucratic flotsam and jetsam that was making everything a pain in the arse to begin with.

George Wallace
Ah, there's an oldy.

That fiery little sawed off azzhole knew the political games and usually had everyone dancing to his tunes.

He used the FEDERAL interstate highway system to punish and reward areas relative to who voted for him

North Alabama usually voted against him as did Birmingham, thus I-65 was completed to Athens in the North then hit a spot in Cullman County (always voted for him) then skipped Birmingham/Jefferson County to Alabaster where it went the rest of the way..

Interesting little side game - the local businesses in Decatur and Birmingham were glad to have the entirety of all that traffic locked into traffic jams tight by all those fast foods, restaurants, gas stations, motels..

I would say that the best of governors are some of the modern Republican governors - Noem, DeSantis, Abbott...

Those old ones were playing caricature..

Ugh. I guess Nathan Deal or hell, maybe even Zell Miller. Ol' Zell came around quite a bit in his later years. Not much to choose from here in occupied Georgia. We will still fight the good fight, but it ain't looking so good, boys.

Nathan Deal. He stood up to the various special interests groups and said the budget had to be cut and actually cut them. Education unions howled but he did what had to be done.

Kirk Fordice. Showed that Rep. could win governorship. Had a great First Lady who he screwed over, but finally led Conservatives to identify as Republicans.

If we’re talking about La this is the only reasonable answer.

His name is on my high school diploma for 1986. Funny thing is GW stood in the school door at bamuh in 1963 to prevent blacks from entering. Fast forward to the early '80's. He wins a fourth term in a wheel chair, paralyzed from the waist down. Gets the black vote, they loved him.
He ran his wife. Lurleen, for gov. in the late 60's when he had to sit out a term and she won.

I remember the unfinished part of I65 north of B'ham. Gov. Fob James got it finished in the early 80's.
