U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday said Americans would see "substantial announcements" in coming days aimed at lowering the prices of products like coffee, bananas and other items not grown in the United States.

Bessent told the Fox News program "Fox and Friends" that the announcements, which he did not define, would bring down prices "very quickly," adding that Americans would start feeling better about the economy in the first half of 2026.

The Treasury chief said a $2,000 rebate check proposed by President Donald Trump that would be funded by tariff revenues would be for those earning less than $100,000 per year, but no decisions had been made.

I do!! …..

Wish I didn’t. I got this email from a major supplier earlier today. Prices going up up up:

quote:

Partners and friends, I know it’s a busy time for everyone and I wish you a wonderful holiday season ahead. In the summer, I let you know we would hold prices through the end of 2025. We have, and I’m pleased to say we’ll honor that promise for the rest of the year. Unfortunately, the small price adjustment we made in June wasn’t enough to offset the significant cost increases we’ve faced. As a result, prices on many (redacted) products will increase in January. Because tariffs vary greatly between our sourcing countries, it’s impossible to make a simple flat rate increase like we did in the summer. So we're approaching this brand by brand and category by category, being as careful as we can. On average, prices will increase by about 5%. The full list of styles with price changes is available here. I know this isn’t welcome news. We have done all we can to pass on the smallest possible increase. Since tariffs were announced eight months ago, we’ve been working hard to minimize their impact on you. We have negotiated with our sourcing partners to lower prices. We moved products out of higher tariff countries, re-sourcing approximately 40% of our styles. And we absorbed a significant amount of costs ourselves. We hope this will be the only time we raise prices in 2026, but we need to see stability in tariffs before we can commit to that. It remains a dynamic time—you have our promise to always be transparent and do the right thing for you, our customers. As always, we appreciate your partnership. I know you have choices where you buy your (redacted). We’ll continue to work every day to earn your trust and your business. Best,

I make less than 100k, I get taxed into oblivion and I vote exclusively red or independent. I happen, though, to be in an area where the average household income per year is about $27k, and cost of living is low, so my $70k feels pretty good where I'd be basically homeless in California.

But I would also rather the money just be used to pay down the deficit. It doesn't matter who is in charge though, the federal government is obsessed with throwing money away.

The irony of discussing lowering prices while simultaneously discussing a stimulus didnt seem to register with the guy.

A stimulus will not help inflation at all.

Same here.
I guess everyone on the PT board makes over $100,000 per year. I work around a lot of people that make between $50,000 and less than $100,000 per year and they get taxed, pay their share of the medical insurance and get no government help besides the standard deduction. Our medical insurance went up between 27% and 42% depending on single or family plans. I would prefer that instead of giving people each $2,000 they (government) should just add it to the Standard Deduction for this 2025 tax season.

Does trump claim to be conservative though? I mean, I used to be a Democrat. He just is what he is.
