They may not be fighting for it because they just haven't thought to do so. I'm sure if they realized how important it was to you and those like you - and they actually saw the letters/emails - you would get a legit response out of them.
I think a lot of people don't realize how relatively easy it is to contact government officials and think "oh, he/she would never see it."

When group discussions go to Politics and a few of us get quiet, we give a quick look, like: “you too?” Or, I usually talk about voting Libertarian, which I’ve done historically for the last 15-20 years. That gets them all to shut up. They loosely respect Libertarianism, but don’t get it.
