A debate w/ Matt Taibbi and Douglas Murray defending the resolution and Malcom Gladwell (The New Yorker) and Michelle Goldberg (NYT) against it.

LINK

Taibbi calling out Goldberg for basically lying on stage about Taibbi's writings was gold. The whole debate is damn good.

Needless to say, Taibbi and Murray destroyed Gladwell and Goldberg.

He insinuated 4 times that Taibbi is a racist.

Also, I like how Michelle Goldberg proved Taibbi and Murray's point when she talked about her conversation w/ Malcom before the debate about the issue of Hunter's laptop, and Malcom said something like "who cares about that story?"

I watched the whole debate. Gladwell and Goldberg are fricking idiots and don’t deserve to be on the same stage as Taibbi and Murray

Malcom starts every sentence with:

“I’m astonished” or some variant about a statement. Then makes the “Matt is a racist joke” followed by a vapid word salad.

The only time he sounded truly astonished was why anyone would care about the Biden laptop story. That dude is the definition of living in a bubble.

They really hate Taibbi because they thought he was one of them. He used to write pieces where he was heavily critical of the Bush/Cheney administration and the wars… and now he’s going after their team. They feel like he’s a traitor and you can tell they take it personally.

The audience beginning from a point of 52% trusting the MSM was a surprise, even for a Canadian audience.

Right.
I didn't have the patience to linger through the whole thing, but I noticed that as well. Did Gladwell ever get called on it?

Because the first thing Taibbi and/or Murray should have done was observe the repeatedly emotional terms formulating his comments, and equate emotion as filling the void for a lack of logic or rational substance, which in fact is the case.

Should we be affected by or even respectful of limbic responses ("I'm astonished") when those emotions are based entirely on vacuous or false underpinnings?

Worse yet, is the employment of baseless, falsely ascribed invectives ("racist") by both Gladwell and Goldberg. Now THAT is a call for emotional descriptives in response. Invocation of charged terms such as racist/racism is deliberately and deeply offensive. Those are some of the most derisive terms in the lexicon. Unless there is real and personally attributable basis for the accusation, they should be zero-tolerance utterances. Elevating their conversational inclusion to that level should at least put the issuer on guard.

Which sort of brings this to a point of confusion for me -- Gladwell's insertion that "people like him had no place in Cronkite's world." I had to look Gladwell up to get to the bottom of his claim. It turns out his intimation that he is "Black," therefore a "minority," therefore a "victim," therefore he can be particularly 'offended' by 'racists.' As best I can tell, the guy is 1/16th Black, and his remote Black forebears were Jamaican slave-holders. So ... kind of wild, eh?

Last observation: Goldberg started out by discussing disparities between her initial impressions of Canada's truckers' strike vs reality as she found it. Murray missed a real opportunity to hammer the point that Goldberg's ungrounded initial impressions were based on ... wait4it ... MSM fake news reporting.

Hearing a leftist call someone a racist who hasn’t discussed a racial issue is a great sign.

I say that because without fail it means they’ve utterly lost the argument and are calling in an air strike on their own position.

Being accused of gaslighting is almost as satisfying because it means they’ve hit their mental capacity for cognitive dissonance between the messaging they hear on their MSM outlet of choice and the obvious logic of your argument.

I didn't see this thread when I started mine.

Gladwell is a choad. Cronkite was one of the biggest bleeding heart liberals of his era. To say he never gave a voice to the poor or to minorities is about as accurate apparently as Gladwell's book on Northern Ireland. Speaking of which the best part of this debate is when Murray basically pulls Gladwell over to his chair and uses him as a footstool by bringing up all of the inaccuracies in Gladwell's book on Northern Ireland immediately after Gladwell finishes hyperventilating on how important fact checkers are.

The Gladwells of the world are not intellectuals. They are egotists. They do not seek out to absorb knowledge. They seek out to absorb self-importance. Gladwell and Goldberg did more to defend Murray and Taibbi's position than they did to counter it.
