Fake news. The Saudis are the ones who pushed Trump to restart the bombing. Middle East diplomacy 101: Say one thing in public, do the complete opposite behind the scenes.

If the moderate Islamic nations would keep Iran in check the US wouldn't need to be over there. Of course we can't forget the people in the ME have been warring for over 3 thousand years.....the desire to war against one another in the ME is certainly endemic.

Almost certainly not true given the significance of the struggles Saudi Arabia is having with the Houthis at this moment.

Those struggles over the past decade are what led us to this point.

It’s astounding to me how myopic Trump’s critics are when it comes to foreign policy. Trump is the master of linkage.

I get your logic but Saudi Arabia joined in the attacks against Iranian backed groups in Iraq. I wouldn't say that them going on the offensive suggests that they're pushing hard for de-escalation.

Houthis disrupting Saudi Arabia oil flow in the Red Sea is a new wrinkle.

Retaliatory strikes are not necessarily escalatory.

Good. Isn’t anything wrong with that. Unless you just generally hate Muslims without decent reason, generally hate Trump without decent reason, or just plain ole small-minded.

Depends on what you consider "new"

It's not new as in novel but their blockade attempts in the red see go back to late 2023

That's relatively new but not new as in something that has never happened before.

Iran needs to lose before there can be any de-escalation.

The attacks go back to at least 2016 in the Red Sea.

quote:

In addition to strikes targeting U.S., Saudi, and Emirati warships in 2016-2017, the Arsan incident is one of several threats and attacks that the Houthis have directed at civilian shipping near the Bab al-Mandab:

Drone boat attack on oil terminal, June 16, 2017. A self-guiding Shark-33 explosive drone boat, which can be programmed to home in on a target using electro-optical television systems, was used in an unsuccessful attack on a Saudi offshore loading facility in Jizan.

Threat to shipping, November 12, 2017. The Houthi propaganda channel Al Masirah declared that “the battleships and oil tankers of the aggressors and their movements will not be safe from the fire of Yemeni naval forces if they are directed by the senior leadership [to attack].”

Rocket attack on tanker, April 3, 2018. Houthi fast-attack craft fired on the Saudi double-hulled VLCC Abqaiq off the coast of Hodeida, using either rocket-propelled grenades or tactical rockets.

Rocket attack on bulk food vessel, May 10, 2018. The Turkish-flagged bulk carrier Ince Inebolu was struck by a rocket in what the European counterpiracy mission EU NAVFOR characterized as “non-state Yemen-based actors firing a land-based missile or rocket at the vessel.”

Indiscriminate naval mining since 2015. At various points, the Houthis have released drifting mines into the Bab al-Mandab, from which they have floated as far as ninety kilometers southwest of Aden after passing through the strait. According to the latest annual UN Panel of Experts report on Yemen, issued January 26, 2018, forty-four naval mines were found in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in 2017, of which four detonated on commercial vessels. Military use of radar on docked civilian vessels. The Houthis are repeatedly violating the law of armed conflict by forcing commercial ship operators in the Hodeida and Salif anchorage areas to let them use onboard maritime radars to surveil the Red Sea and generate targeting data. This measure seemed to begin after the Obama administration ordered strikes that destroyed Houthi coastal radar systems in October 2016.

You figured it out yet? Yep, a lot of testing going on and only one side has proved to be very dominant. Certainly you would not want that dominant side to show what it is really capable of, right?

To be clear, you are talking about sporadic attacks

I'm referencing the blockade on SA oil that's currently partially in place (They are giving Chinese vessels waivers)

The IRGC WANTS CONTINUING VIOLENCE. Every time we try to settle things down they start shooting at ships out in the Persian Gulf or firing at any target within range, US, Saudi or other. They WANT a land invasion.

We stepped in quicksand there. The only responses I can think of are to arm every rebel group in and around Iran, have the Israelis assassinate every high level IRGC officer they can find and authorize SA to mount a full blown campaign of extermination against the Houthis. I would NOT try a ground war - we'll get bled dry for years while we should be dealing with China and Cuba.

If the Saudis and the rest of the Muslim countries of the world really want to help then how about they start cracking down on all these Muslims preaching all this Islamist poison. How about they moderate and join the rest of the world living in the year 2026 and stop acting like we are living in the middle of the 3rd Crusade. If they really want to help how about finding and arresting all of their citizens involved with one of these radical jihadist groups.

If SA and the rest of these Muslim countries did those things it would have more power than all the bombs the West has dropped in the Middle East combined. All we can do is shrink the tumor that is radical Islamic terrorism. We can drive the problem into remission for a while but the cancer will always come back at some point for the United States and the world to deal with again at some point. The only true way to stop the cancer from coming back and spreading once again is for these Muslim countries to start moderating and cleaning their own houses of the ideology.
