The State Bar of California is investigating porn star Stormy Daniels’ lawyer Michael Avenatti, Fox News has confirmed, after a complaint was filed regarding allegedly unpaid taxes.

Fox News on Wednesday obtained an April 18-dated letter verifying the existence of the investigation—unrelated to his representation of Daniels.

“The complaint against attorney Michael J. Avenatti has been reviewed and forwarded to the Enforcement Unit for further investigation and prosecution, if warranted,” said the letter from the state bar, written by Supervising Attorney Anand Kumar and reviewed by Fox News.

How is this proper for the bar to look at?

I’d start with ethics

Occupational licensing does have standards

What makes you ask? I imagine the bar looks into every complaint filed with them and goes from there.

I thought the bar only looked at conduct related to one's law practice.

CA Conduct Rules
I didn't notice anything that seems to address paying taxes. I'm all for this guy getting hammered, I just don't think a complaint to the bar about paying taxes will get it done.

I have no problem with people not paying taxes. It's theft.

Perhaps he was the listed attorney for Global Baristas in the acquisition in question.

I'd assume it would be under the umbrella of character and fitness. I believe a few states consider a failure to pay taxes as professional misconduct.

Avenatti signed a contract and swore an oath for the California state bar saying that he would abide by all laws of the state of California and rules of the state bar.

I have no sympathy for people that shite on a contract they signed.

In my experience of submitting a complaint to a bar, they seem to do everything possible to avoid looking into issues. Lawyers investigating lawyers.....LOL

Definitely! Cannot allow anyone with ethics to practice law.

Of course the investigation of Avenatti will show he's a perfect lawyer. Absolutely zero ethics, his picture is the definition of "unethical"!

Well you asked why it might be proper, not why they would do it.

I'm just guessing, like everyone else, since the article lacks a ton of information.

Are you suggesting it's made up?

No, but I think it's one lawyer that wants to frick with another lawyer. I don't think this will go anywhere. Seems it would be better to get this guy nailed on something real and then anything related to ethics would be easier to act on.

You don't think paying taxes is conduct related to your law practice? If his business is set up like most law firms, he pays the taxes for the law firm when he pays his personal taxes.

Bar associations look at anything they want to. Also, every complaint gets an investigation. This isn’t meaningful at this point.
