SOJ is a moron, but an infection from an insect bite CAN get serious, and it is my experience that ant bites (especially fire ants) do seem to have a higher infection rate for some reason. (I get infected bites several times per year, digging post holes and such. Never the swelling that he describes, but nasty-looking nonetheless).
Personally, in this situation I probably would just have called my doc buddy and asked him to phone an antibiotic prescription into the local pharmacy for my daughter.
But that is just rational thought versus emotional over-reaction.

I have two daughters as well.
My response would have been more-measured, but I would have gotten medical care for a serious infection, too.

My aunt is 70 and diabetic. She fell and broke her femur. The hospital wouldn't let my uncle in to be with her while she was checked in or while she was in surgery. It sucks, but I don't blame them.

But you see, hes a tough old baw who doesn't believe in that mumbo jumbo called science.
