Confession time: I recently discovered that I often wear MAGA-coded outfits (well, at least cross necklaces and prairie dresses). As a liberal woman, finding this out was pretty close to horrifying.

As a mental health therapist who’s often in LGBTQ+ spaces, I never want people to worry that I’m not supportive of who they are or anything close to that. While you could argue that clothes don’t automatically determine someone’s beliefs or personhood — and you’d be right, with me as a key example — I try to be mindful about that sort of thing, especially in this day and age. While it may seem silly, it’s true: People notice these things, and they gather messages from it.

“Collective adoption of political style has created a type of communication, and you understand the message without anyone speaking,” said Cesar Cruz, a fashion designer, stylist and co-founder of Sebastian Cruz Couture.

What about the other end of the spectrum? What clothing pieces and accessories are “liberal-coded?”

According to Edith Chan, international image consultant and personal brand expert, it’s an aesthetic that combines intellectualism and calculated accessibility.

“These choices can signal values such as environmental awareness, inclusivity and cultural literacy without displaying an explicit political slogan,” she said.
