Are people born altruistic?

Do you think people are born that way? Do you think that people have to be taught to care for others, and that it is not an innate part of being a human?
Basically, do you think you are inherently supposed to care about the greater good? Are you born with the idea to help and lift up your fellow man or is that just something that we learn, have to be taught, and then put into practice as we go about life?
Is there such thing as the greater good, and if so do you believe it a attainable goal to achieve happiness for all if not most of mankind?

Not at all.
Putting someone or something before yourself must be learned.
That's the Old Adam within you at birth. Original sin.

Think about animals.
If you had two animals in a cage and only enough food for one animal - you would see them fight for it and the dominant one wouldn't share. It wouldn't voluntarily share half simply from altruism.

Have you never spent any length of time around a baby or toddler? They have 0 fricks to give about anyone else when they want something. Caring about anyone other than themselves has to be taught. They do not come out of the oven that way.

Born in the image of God, so noble. But with original sin, so selfish. Beautiful and flawed.

People will always act in their own self interest.

No, humanity is hopelessly wicked. Once adherence to an absolute moral authority is gone, people descend into depravity.

To some small extent, yes. Like the vast majority of simians, humans evolved as social animals, and a certain level of caring for others (troop before individual) arises from that.
The more sophisticated trait of “true altruism” is almost certainly learned.

Food for thought, when you finish with the grocery cart, do you push it to an open space where another car parking would unwittingly hit it, do you shove it in the nearest corner....or do you take it to the buggy corral???
Ive noticed the nearer you are to the store, there are always people blocking the lot, backing up traffic into the street while they wait on someone to leave the store so they can park close....and usually five fat people get out of the car......and the buggy corral there is always empty with errant carts everywhere....the ones in the back are usually full....placed there by in shape altruistic people.

No one is truly altruistic. They do things that seem altruistic to benefit themselves emotionally.

Does essence precede existence?

Altruism is most definitely a learned trait, and not the natural state of the human species. If it was, we could readily implement "defund the police" as public policy, without any serious detriment to the social order.

Idk, I used to be a selfless person, now not so much, IDGAF. Is that learned?
