re: Anyone else becoming more Libertarian?Posted by Mike da Tigah on 7/1/20 at 6:01 pm to LSUZombie
I always try to align myself with Jefferson. When in doubt, ask how the founding fathers would view things regarding our government today, and I think I’m usually in the best place. Like reading the constitution as it was intended rather than reading it and seeing how you can get around it. Two completely different mindsets. Original intent is the framework. Anything else is a perversion of what this country was intended to be and operate as.
In short, we have an out of control centralized government and the problems we all face is because of the fact it was never intended to operate as our overseer, and yet here we are.

I'm talking more about the social/cultural stuff that has developed over a while. I think it's pretty clear that there is a divide there. In many cases of folks I've known in the circles, there has been a gravitation towards something other than generalized libertarianism. I suppose that's how people develop, though.

But that's not necessarily a need to divide the terminology anymore than it already has been; we simply need to educate on the difference.
I'm too tired to go into a diatribe (and you will likely know what I mean by shorthand), but you can take a group of people who all firmly follow the NAP, yet split them into three groups merely based on their position on original/first property ownership.

Yep, and another one is IP.
I wish these were the major debates society was having. A LOT of problems would be gone if that's what we were down to.

Borders with no welfare state.
I agree with this but it is not possible/sustainable Too many foreigners would flood into our country and labor wages would plummet or lack of jobs would cause a large portion of the residents to need assistance. Those people vote and just like we have happening now, the group of people voting for handouts is outnumbering those voters that are contributing.
Sadly, our current government will have to collapse before a third party could gain control. Hope I am wrong.

Neither the media nor politicians have any interest in substantive debates, particularly if people might find common ground.
Isn't it interesting that three quarters of Americans back civil asset forfeiture reform, yet the issue fell out of the spotlight nearly overnight?
I was raised in a republican household, in my late teens/early twenties I was a big supporter of Ron Paul, after he lost (not even close either) it became pretty clear that the libertarian way of thinking wasn't going to resonate nationally.
Lots of FB friends are posting constantly about JoJo, posting polls showing she has a chance. It's cute, it reminds me of when I had optimism but I just point out that the game is rigged and if they followed third party politics they'd know there is almost zero chance a third party ever emerges in a substantive way.
I currently lean slightly left.

shite, mine is limited liability.
When I want to really frick with my progressive friends, I remind them that if I had my druthers, neither limited liability nor the corporate veil would exist. Watching them twist themselves into knots defending big corporations is fricking hilarious

I would bet every single dollar I have that she won't get 7% of the popular vote.
I'm still going to vote for her.

Trump had done a great job. No, he is not perfect but don’t be duped. He is not your cookie cutter politician and that is why hel every system politician is against him. I will stick with him because he is not a phony. I hate these entitled Washington insiders who are in bed with the media and SJW’s. Screw all of ‘em. Trump 2020. God Bless America.

Nobody wants my vote because I love abortions, gays, low taxes, and guns.

Trump has been in office for nearly four years and the only things I can think of that he's accomplished is a staggeringly modest tax cut and elevating Gorsuch to SCOTUS. Everything else is glittering generality bullshite.

I’m not sure that the insanity of the left or the spineless hypocrisy of the right should drive anyone towards libertarianism (or any other political philosophy). Libertarians are just as susceptible to corruption or giving up their beliefs or whatnot as anyone else. When thinking about what “you are” it’s important to remove the political philosophy from the political party.
I've considered myself a libertarian since 2014 or so. Was a hard-core republican up until 2012.
When the two major political parties decided that Trump and Hilary were best suited to lead us I kind of checked out of politics. Two heads to the same snake.

Anyone else becoming more Libertarian?
*The larger our welfare state, the less some libertarians like open borders. We should absolutely express lane Hong Kong residents. This would rob China of intelligent and resourceful people. You could drop the residents of Hong Kong anywhere in the United States and they would succeed and be a huge benefit to our economy. I would happily trade 10 American Marxists for any 1 Hong Kong resident.
Libertarianism will never be large enough to be a relevant political party.
For the reason why, H. L. Mencken said it best:
quote:
The truth is that the common man's love of liberty, like his love of sense, justice and truth, is almost wholly imaginary. As I have argued, he is not actually happy when free; he is uncomfortable, a bit alarmed, and intolerably lonely. He longs for the warm, reassuring smell of the herd, and is willing to take the herdsman with it. Liberty is not a thing for such as he. He cannot enjoy it rationally himself, and he can think of it in others only as something to be taken away from them. It is, when it becomes a reality, the exclusive possession of a small disreputable minority of men, like knowledge, courage and honor. A special sort of man is needed to understand it, nay, to stand it - and is inevitably an outlaw in democratic societies. The average man doesn't want to be free. He simply wants to be safe.

There’s a lot of truth to that. Include Kavanaugh too. But otherwise he has done extremely little.
