Anyone Checked on Their Local Restaurant Lately?

We’ve had three places go out of business recently. These aren’t fly-by-night places either. All were established places that had been in business for quite a while.
In talking to two other owners that we know, both said that their food prices year over year have tripled in a lot of cases. Chicken is one that both cited. Input costs coupled with labor cost are killing them. One guy hasn’t had a pay check in a month. The other guy is just barely getting by. Both are about to dramatically increase their prices and neither are sure if their markets will bear those costs.
I believe we are early into what’s coming. This isn’t your normal market correction or recession. We’ve inflated this economy through gov’t manipulation since 2008. It’s a house of cards.

Building back better indeed. One ruined family business at a time. They should have learned to code.

The best reason I ever heard about these closures is hearing idiots say that if they paid their help better money they wouldn't be closing up.
Completely ignoring skyrocketing costs of operation, of food, maintenance, etc.
Coming soon: $25 appetizers with reduced portions

They want good eating family restaurants to close up for good and so nasty corporate food will just slide right in.
I support the local restaurants because some cook food from scratch and the service is usually better. But they can't compete with corporations in tough times. I would rather they survive than places like McDonalds who serve poison and has given me some bad stomach aches.

There is only one restaurant in the small town near my house. They are still open but with reduced hours and higher prices. I go eat there as much as I can because the owners are very good people and the food is great.

Two places in Southern Oklahoma went down this week and I don't see anyone stepping in to re-open...
We all knew this was going to happen when Biden started talking a minimum wage of $15 per hour...
It's not just this election. But what I see and worry about is loosing the mom and pop places and leaving nothing but corperate left...
Also take into account this factor... Lets say your just an average Joe and you want to open you own restaurant... Real Estate costs are beyond what a normal person can start out with, plue there is less and less property available...

Where I live a place called Simple Simon's Pizza based out of Oklahoma has some damned good pizza. It is a chain and a small one but the one where I live is franchised owned by a local that I talk to each time I visit. They have spaghetti and meatballs which are really good but you have to ask because it isn't on the menu.

The one where I live is absolutely terrible. I haven't been to one in years but when they started getting very political it was the nail in the coffin. They rarely have any customers and if it wasn't a corporation then it would have closed up quick.

Discussed costs with a restaurant owner who has 3 restaurants. It's a matter of tracking food and labor costs.
He removed chicken wings from all his menus, switched from chicken breasts to thighs (offered breasts at an upcharge) and priced all items to meet his margin.
But I think what might have kept him afloat was the big sign in front of his seafood restaurant that announced EBT ACCEPTED!
Yay government.

Had 2 close in my town this week. 1 hasn’t been open too long and was a bbq place that was high as GP. Took my wife and 2 kids a month after it opened. 1 appetizer, 4 bbq sandwich plates no alcohol and was $100. Second place was an established place that had to raise prices and people stopped going. 12” shrimp poboy was $18.

I'll be honest, I've had to pull back the reigns quite a bit lately. We usually eat out a few times a week because of our hectic schedules, but we just don't have the extra cash. Red beans tonight and salads at the house last night. Probably left overs tomorrow night. Sucks.

I have friend opened a small coffee/bakery/deli shop and she said I don’t expect to make a profit for at least the first 3 years. She works 5 to 5 6 days a week.
One problem some of the new small business owners have is they expect a quick ROI.
A problem established small businesses have is they don’t want to put in the hours like they use to. They want to hire people to do that for them. They get burnt out and are above waiting and clearing tables.
Ate at place in Tupelo last week called the Neon Pig and it was really good. They only had one waitress it was packed and she did a great job. Talked to my after we left and we both thought she probably made $3,000 to $4,000 a month in tips.
It doesn’t take a big staff to run a restaurant just a good staff.
I’ve noticed small cafe/restaurants where the owners are involved seem to be doing pretty good. Local donut shops, coffee shops, and cafe’s are doing good.
