BTW, in the very near future all of this will be coming to a major city near you, here in the good ole’ USA.

quote:

The government of Haiti declared a 72-hour state of emergency on Sunday after armed gangs stormed a major Port-au-Prince prison. At least 12 people were killed and about 3,700 inmates escaped in the jailbreak.

Seems like two sides of the same coin.

Have been to Haiti a couple of times and it’s remarkable the difference between Port au Prince and the rest of the country.

Even Cap Hatien, a fairly big city on the north coast, is pretty calm. You could fly into Cap today and feel pretty safe traveling around the rest of the country. Parts of which are beautiful with great people, as an aside.

Just avoid PaP (Cap’n Obvious)

Petionville in PaP is a fairly safe area.
Ille Vache and Jacmel also safe and worth a visit.
The Highlands east of Gonaives are beautiful and relatively safe as well.
The only area I would recommend avoiding is Citi Solei in PaP.

Biden has sent his Department of State to negotiate transporting 4,000 prisoners to the US. (Satire)

Haiti wasn't on my list, but was considering DR and now I'm not because it could spill over to their side of the island.

DR is pretty damn militant about keeping Haitians on their side of the island.

If you go to the resorts in DR, you are generally fine. If you go off into a lot of the non-touristy areas, you may have problems.

It's even more remarkable the difference between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The same island, similar resources, similar histories, ethnically similar people but all in all the DR is a relatively prosperous well-ordered country. Their elected governments do tend towards authoritarianism in times of crisis but they're no Haiti.

That doesn’t count all the kids that were snatched by the Clinton Global Initiative for trafficking.

Haiti was thje first black republic. Proud and sucessful people. We should hold them up as the model for prosperity.

Haiti, South Africa, Chicago…if only there was something they had in common.
