My big time Catholic FIL hates England and loves Ireland. He's travelled the world, but has no interest in going to England, yet has been many other places in Europe, including Ireland twice.
Do other Catholics have this same feelings towards the Protestant majority England?

Northern Ireland had a majority "Remain" vote in the 2015 referendum. Naturally, they'd be a bit pissed at the thought of any time of Immigration and Customers checks at the border with the Republic of Ireland.

Ireland is just a sensitive issue, and the thought of any increase in authority on the island just seems like a bad idea.

The UK just needs to let Northern Ireland go. The people there are way more Irish than they are British.

That the big deal amongst Remainers is that the Brexit backstop would destroy the Good Friday’s Agreement and lead to another war.

I call BS. Folks in Ireland and Northern Ireland are not very religious anymore, and most of the under 40 year olds don’t care about the old hatreds, and 20% of their populations are foreigners.

Well, they voted and disagreed.

How about they just let Northern Ireland become independent (like Canada) and remain in the EU with Ireland?

I'm sure something can be worked out. England is no longer a protestant majority country.

LINK

There are only about 850,000 Anglicans left in England...compared to 2.7 million Muslims.

Ireland and England have hated each other for a long time, but I don’t know how much that sentiment extends to Catholics outside of Ireland.

Why don't the Catholics just go south to Ireland, and they can stay in the EU with Ireland?

Meanwhile Northern Ireland Brexit's and everyone is happy.

No more "Troubles."

The backstop has become the sticking point because it might require a hard border to be erected? There never was a hard border was there? Someone help me understand this. I watch some stuff on YouTube and come away more confused. I am a college man from LSU, “went in dumb come out dumb too, hustling round Atlanta in my alligator shoes...”

Little know fact - I was at Dromoland Castle in County Clare when the Brexit vote took place. I celebrated with a tall glass of Green Spot. It was a good day.

Having a "hard" border has nothing to do with being in the EU. It has to do with being a part of the Schengen Agreement. Which I think the UK is not part of.

So I don't know what changes.

I'm not sure why Brexit would create issues with the Ireland-N.Ireland border.
