But seriously, it is odd outside of some kind of quid pro quo.

This is disappointing. If Trump was serious about Greenland he wouldn't appoint Landry to anything involving Greenland.

Best guess (and it is totally a guess) Landry gets national attention and some foreign credentials (sort of) and Trump gets someone who will bang the Greenland drum.
Landry gets a minor role, which works just fine for Trump.

Johnson & Scalise got him appointed to Greenland to keep him as far away from LSU Football as possible…

NATO is on thin ice. To paraphrase Marco, NATO was formed to defend countries with common ideals and freedom in a perilous time after WWII. We had a common origin and philosophy that go all the way back to the Greeks and Romans who fostered individual freedom in a Christian culture. With much of secular Western Europe now adopting anti-American, censor and anti-American business culture and allowing their national history to be obliterated by immigration, NATO is nothing more than a European benefitting defensive agreement with decreasing benefit to the US. So, if Europe doesn't straighten up, we may not do NATO in the future.
All good points, with which I agree. Thanks for the thoughtful response.
No disrespect to Landry, but why not appoint someone with SOME relevant experience who isn't the sitting Governor of a state? Landry did some good things as Attorney General. Why not task him with one of those issues?
NVM: I have figured it out. Trump values loyalty the most. I think he drafts following a "best player available" strategy based on that rather than "skill set needed." See, Real Estate attorney, Lindsey Halligan as US Attorney and Marco Rubio as Archivist of the US AND National Security Advisor WHILE Secretary of State.

It makes no sense, and is actually quite retarded.

Bite me. I don't have any shtick. If I have an opinion I express it. If I don't know something, and think others might, I ask a question.
I have been less critical than most of Landry. I think he was a good Attorney General. I was particularly proud of him fighting the Biden Administration in Missouri v Biden.
It's not being critical of Landry to observe that he has no obvious qualifications for this particular job AND to know that Greenland and Denmark aren't going to receive Landry as an envoy.

Apparently Landry and Trump disagree about who initiated the appointment:
The President lauds Landry as "A great guy. A deal guy."

Since Greenland's Summertime temperatures average about 50 degrees, it provides "Gumbo Weather" year-round.

Here are President Trump’s full remarks about how Landry came to be the Envoy. Fun part is that Trump implies that Denmark's claim to Greenland is somehow tenuous and that ours is just as good: "They say that Denmark was there 300 years ago or something with a boat. Well we had boats there too I'm sure."

Oil and gas
Does Gov Landry actually know anything about the oil & gas industry other than his best friend owning a very successful offshore oilfield boating company, and also siding with trial lawyers to sue Louisiana’s local oil & gas industry?

At a Christmas party last week somebody commented that Landry was angling for a diplomatic appointment. The rumor didn't seem likely at the time. Then Trump announces recalling 30 career diplomats so he can give those jobs to loyal and generous supporters. Now Landry gets some vague unpaid diplomatic status. I guess that he has been asking for an appointment but didn't make the short list for a real one. Or... the Pres thinks the Cajuns were expelled from Greenland.

Why does Trump care about Landry, though? Is he just being polite? Playing pollitics?
