Corporate taxes are just a hidden tax on the consumer so i have no problem with companies paying zero tax

However,

Due to amazons business model and the need for warehousing hubs in just about every state, is it necessary to give them tax breaks? Just wait a little and they’ll be forced to pay the state because they need the access.

Do the local businesses get the same tax break?

Rumored 1000 jobs with average pay $98k

Governor's press conference at 10 am.

Say what you will about Tate Reeves, he has been good at bringing jobs to Mississippi.

I watched the press conference, and he wouldn't name the company. I assumed it was Amazon, but do you know for certain? He said two data centers are being built in different locations in Madison County. I was wondering if it was one company building 2 data centers or 2 different companies each building a data center.

As a Madison resident, its been a open secret for a few days.

Amazon has a job opening for a data center construction manager here.

One company is building two centers. One at the Madison megasite just north of Gluckstadt (near the Amazon warehouse) and one at a site off of Highland Colony Blvd in Ridgeland.

I think they're building their largest new facility here just east of Columbia, SC where I-20, I-26 and I-77 all intersect and less than 45 minutes from the 26-95 onramp. Their new facilities here are also 10 minutes from CAE (main airport) and 10 minutes from one of our smaller airports.

They've already got their phone center, ops center up over there and running. That's always their first step. The actual fulfillment center is looking like it is going-to-be massive.

With that said here's what to expect.

They bring a lot of people with them that will try to throw their amazon weight around.

They buy homes and condos near their operations in order to place key employees .... and lots of them.

They will try to poach everone they can get their hands on from local big businesses .... in our case they butt raped some of the local big boys including BCBS, especially for HR specialists. They'll build a massive recruiting and talent acquisition team and it's no holds barred for them .... they spend a lot of money.

Prepare egress and ingress ramps to see a lot of upgrading road construction all around their facilities.

They do hire a lot of people and there is a lot of peripheral boosts to the economy when they move in. Road crews, airport facilities, all the support businesses ... restaurants, cleaning crews, construction crews, it's all pretty impressive. Plus, here at least, there is a planned agricultural connection to support their Whole Foods division through produce distribution given our four growing seasons .... I mean, they demand a lot but they do appear to give back a lot if you can stand their hubris.

In general how do the Madison residents feel about this going up in their backyard?

Cost? It COST them nothing, you need an economics course. There should be no corporate taxes anyway.

If the state is only kicking in property and income tax credits, nothing.

If the state is paying for infrastucture improvements, then that's some cash they gave up.

Alabama did that when Mercedes came to Tuscaloosa. City\state donated the land, made exit\entrance ramps off 20\59 and ran the utilities to the plant.

Now 25 years later they have multiple plants there and employ thousands and that is not even considering the suppliers who are all around the area. The plant runs with minimal stockpiles and the suppliers have to be close by to meet whatever daily demand Mercedes has.

Between Mercedes and the University our area has been blessed with good paying jobs.

People and companies really need to stop using AWS. They are the ones who shut down Parlor over political claims and bias.

Who is the say they won't just up and doing to any other company?

My circle is supportive, and here's why.

We need developments like this. While Madison is a high income, highly educated area, we are attached to Jackson that is a failing city. Madison is a lot like Franklin, Tennessee or Mountain Brook, Alabama but we don't have Nashville or even Birmingham.

Developments like this help us with independence that upscale suburbs without great cities need. We have excellent public schools, a private school that is about to expand into a IMG Academy model, and columns on our gas stations - things the rest of Mississippi doesn't have. What we need are more jobs like this that will attract younger workers.

My Georgia Tech engineering grad daughter, who works in Charlotte, NC, is probably not coming back - but now there is opportunity if she wanted to. That's what my circle worries about - our kids having opportunities in the coming new economy. And that doesn't necessarily mean working with this facility - ancillary jobs are going to come with it. More doctors, accountants, and other professionals will be needed.

Aws, and shipping hubs are two totally different things.

You dont build a cloud compute server hub and let it sit idle.

Madison is in a separate county from Jackson, so it doesn't have the same hurdles SG has to deal with. It's more like Denham Springs or Prairieville, but with much better planning, infrastructure and overall decision making.

Average pay. 900 of those jobs will pay $20 an hour.

Better hope this doesn't happen.

Typically, AWS facility is a data center. What would that have to do with a delivery center?

I don't see how you can possibly spend that much on a server farm.

It is pretty easy now days. You build about 10 data center buildings with each ones providing about 60MW of critical IT power. In total, the campus will require over 1GW of power from the grid.

The cost of all the UPSs, STSs, busway, switchgear, etc. is stupid high these days. The money goes fast. this is just one way.

Holy frick, the tax breaks the state and city gave them are probably in billions when all added up. Sure they brought in jobs, but at what cost. And when it a poor state, ur politicians will sell the tax payers down the river to claim progress. This as almost as bad as the stadiums being paid for by tax payers, under the house of just tax breaks.

Why would they not build it in a colder climate.

Yeah, when it is cold out, you can just open the windows in your server farm and let that cool air in

Network latency reduction and diverse locations are more important than keeping their electric bill down.

AWS needs more locations to hardend the whole system from disasters. This is their current footprint in US

Microsoft wisely added South Central (Texas) about 6-7 years ago and is ahead in the game in total DCs

Good for him for bringing it. I think they are opening one in Monroe, LA as well.

Problem is the shelf life of a worker at plants like this is 1 year. They get worn down fast. It will be a revolving door for jobs.
