Charging documents released on Thursday show Smirnov was a confidential source for the FBI and allegedly provided "false derogatory information about [President Biden] and [Hunter Biden] ... in 2020, after [Biden] became a presidential candidate." Smirnov is the same person that Republicans have called "a highly credible FBI source" and have used to claim Joe Biden is corrupt, according to multiple senior congressional sources.
quote:
Smirnov allegedly reported to an FBI agent in March 2017 that he had a phone call with the owner of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, and noted Hunter Biden was at the time a member of Burisma's board. Three years later, Smirnov allegedly made false statements in describing two meetings in 2015 or 2016 in which executives associated with Burisma told him they had hired Hunter Biden to "protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems."
quote:
According to federal authorities, Smirnov further said the executives paid $5 million each to Hunter Biden and Joe Biden while the latter was in office as vice president, so that Hunter Biden "will take care of all those issues through his dad," referring to the then-criminal investigation being conducted by the then-Ukrainian prosecutor general into Burisma.

Chilling proposition. Seems to be a toss up at best. Congress (GOP specifically) have been acting as though it's been business as usual -- whether 2017 or 2024.
Will anyone someone in the Chambers make the following challenge on the Floor: "DO WE OR DO WE NOT STILL HAVE A REPUBLIC?? DO WE HAVE A CONSTITUTION??" Maybe then we'll all know how to proceed.

Still waiting for the left to explain how Biden is not weaponizing the DOJ against America

Any reply to that would simply be a lie. So why bother asking.
He's right, we aren't getting out of this the easy way.

Have faith.
If anyone made false statements about Trump I’m sure the FBI will get them.

This indictment seems a lot like Hunter's laptop being Russian disinformation according to 50 top intelligence officers.
Of course, they charged Trump with what Hillary did, so there's that.

The Trump appointee brought this charge. Special counsel David Weiss Is the same guy who said that Hunter Biden’s defense was based on fiction.
If the lead guy, appointed as U.S. Attorney by Trump, brings the charge, it’s probably warranted.

We’ll find out in a couple of years that the FBI set this guy up to provide false information on the Biden’s in order to taint any legitimate investigation into the Bidens.

As alleged in the indictment, the events that Smirnov first reported to the FBI Agent in June 2020 were fabrications. In truth and fact, the defendant had contact with executives from Burisma in 2017, after the end of the administration when Public Official 1 had no ability to influence U.S. policy and after the Ukrainian Prosecutor General had been fired in February 2016. The indictment alleges that the defendant transformed his routine and unextraordinary business contacts with Burisma in 2017 and later into bribery allegations against Public Official 1 after expressing bias against Public Official 1 and his presidential candidacy.
As further alleged in the indictment, when he was interviewed by FBI agents in September 2023, Smirnov repeated some of his false claims, changed his story as to other of his claims, and promoted a new false narrative after he said he met with Russian officials.

You mean after he tried to plea bargain it away under the guise of a massively stepped down gun charge? After he tried to runout SOL on the charges?
