Why do we refer to a segment of our population this way? It's divisive. I am referred to as "White" - no biggie. What's wrong with "Black?"
Fact - there is no such thing as a white Black person.
Fact - there are many, many white African - Americans.

Not meant to create strife...just an honest question.
When will we ALL be considered Americans?

You've obviously given this a lot of thought. What do you call Asian Americans?

I can appreciate that. But the OP referred to "white people". So do you do the same for white people? Do you only refer to people by country and not race or is that just Asian Americans?

I was working in Accra, Ghana about 10 years ago and during my stay there I was invited to have dinner at his home with the Chairman of the largest commercial bank in Ghana. (He was black, of course.)

During the dinner he asked me why American blacks preferred being known as "African Americans"?

I told him I had never asked why but I supposed it was a way of honoring their heritage.

He thought about that for a minute then said, "If I should ever emmigrate to the United States I would be very happy to simply be known as an American."

True story....

Most countries don't have the racist history of the US. We live in a country that treated races differently for hundreds of years. Until the last few decades really. A country that divided races by law. Of course he wouldn't understand.

Just think what a jackass you'd look like if you called a black person from South America who's immigrated to this country an African American.

Most countries have a history of even worse race relations. One country systematically gassed 6 million people assisted by people from other neighboring countries.

Every country has treated races in their country differently. In much of Africa today blacks discriminate against whites and "grays." (Gray people in sub-Saharan Africa are people of Indian descent.) The president of Zimbabwe just last week said no black in his country would be arrested if they killed a white farmer.

You need to travel outside the U.S. more.

Please reread what I posted and review your responses. Especially the hundreds of years bits as well as the by law parts.
