ACLU sues Police Bureau for live-streaming video of courthouse proteste

So filming cops is ok, cops filming rioters is not ok, brilliant.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon on Wednesday filed a lawsuit against the Portland Police Bureau, challenging its livestreaming of protests.
The ACLU contends the bureau’s practice of filming and broadcasting protesters violates state law that prohibits police from collecting or maintaining information about the political, religious or social views, associations or activities of people who are not suspected of criminal activity.
The livestream has been one of dozens of livestreams of nightly demonstrations in Portland. The Police Bureau put a link to its livestream on its Twitter feed three times this month.
“Unlawful police surveillance threatens our First Amendment rights,” said Jann Carson, interim executive director of the ACLU of Oregon. “The Portland Police Bureau has no constitutional reason to train its video cameras on demonstrators — or to broadcast those images publicly on the internet, where federal agents and others can analyze them.”
The suit also is on behalf of an unidentified protester who was caught on the police streaming footage while demonstrating outside the police union office in North Portland on July 13, according to the suit. LINK

that's an interesting interpretation
there is one thing in the legal profession that grinds my gears and it's attorneys who seek to be overly clever. it really fricks up case law

Once upon a time the ACLU was a noble entity, it is now time for it to go away as that is no longer the case.

So are we going to ban Dash Cams now? If they interpret the law this strictly then dash cams and body cams will be illegal. They can’t have it both ways.

I guess cameras taking license plate numbers on public servitude going into a neighborhood on a public street is legal?
Information gathered from that at times is given to police?
I guess most of the ACLU lawyers live in areas like this or buildings with cameras that the view extends to public side walks which that information can be given to police?
How about letting private citizens take videos of the protest and if they choose to give it to other private citizens who give it to the police would that be a loophole?
This opens a huge can of worms.

Body cams need to be banned as well.

If that's the case then every surveillance camera on a police station is illegal

The ACLU was founded by a known communist.

When was this? They'd take a case every now and then (Skokie,Illinois Nazi case) to give themselves the veneer of impartiality. Now, they don't even try to hide it. Where were they during the massive trampling of rights during this Chinese Flu farce?

Why I come here. Your take is brilliant, but also obvious. One would expect investigative journalists to conclude this, but alas, I instead read it from an Ole Miss fan.
Well done, sir.

Public places are filmed by everything, all the time. Joe Blow with his iPhone, the ATM cameras, the security cameras at the bank and CVS.
There is no reasonable expectation of privacy or that you will not be filmed in public places in 2020. The only real questions would be about commercial use of your likeness, but police should just post signs and make announcements (WE ARE FILMING THIS ACTIVITY FOR EVERYONE'S COMFORT AND SAFETY!). Boom. Solved.
