A well-written, well defined red flag is a decent idea to stop this stuff

The idea is simple—if a person exhibits behavior indicating that they might be a threat to themselves or others (such as suicidal ideation or violent fantasies), a member of his family, a school official, or a police officer can go to court to secure an order that permits police to seize his weapons and prohibit him from purchasing any additional weapons so long as the order lasts.

A well-drafted red flag law should contain abundant procedural safeguards, including imposing a burden of proof on the petitioner, hearing requirements, and a default expiration date
unless the order is renewed through a clear showing of continued need. But its potential effectiveness is crystal clear.

quote:

In 2018—after the horrific school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey proposed a comprehensive safe schools program that incorporated a series of measures that were based on careful analysis of each and every significant school shooting since Columbine. I’d urge you to read the entire document. Ducey proposed enhanced background checks, an increased security presence at schools, and increased mental health resources. He also proposed a red flag law, and to support that proposal he included this chart

quote:

Note that in every one of the deadliest school shootings, the shooter exhibited behavior before the shooting that could have triggered a well-drafted red flag law.

But it’s not enough just to pass a red flag law. We have to educate citizens and police about their existence and scope. Laws don’t enforce themselves.

LINK

Red flag laws:

a) do not punish innocent people for the actions of a shooter (unlike bans on guns and other regs)

b) give the accused a right to explain himself before his weapons are taken

c) are designed specifically for mentally ill mass shootings, rather than general gun violence

I'd suggest poeple that were traumatized by mean tweets should have a giant red flag.

No.

This is the sort of feel-good bullshite which does nothing but open the door to the "well, we just haven't done enough of it yet" mindset.

You're focusing on the symptom, not the root cause.

That's not how it works

The accused has a right to a hearing before his weapons are taken.

How many of these mass shooters had a gun legally where this would work? I believe most have guns illegally-stolen, taken from relative, etc.

Who presides over these hearings?

A leftist judge that wants guns off the streets?

A few years ago in Lafayette, LA, a psychopath shot up a movie theater on Johnston Street. A few days before the shooting, he attempted to buy a gun, but he had a flag on his background check due to a domestic violence incident. So, the gun store refused to sell him a gun. He still managed to shoot and kill multiple people.

More than 60% of guns used on crimes were not obtained legally because, GASP, CRIMINALS DO NOT FOLLOW GUN LAWS!!!!

As for mass shootings, nearly all of them are in places where carrying a gun is illegal, but security to actually screen for guns is non-existent. Shootings take place in these areas BECAUSE of these factors. Shooters shoot where their victims are least likely to shoot back. Because criminals don’t follow laws while victims of crime typically do, only the mass shooters have guns at the places they attack.

Because there's no way a government board would go after someone because of their politics.....

Yeah, that's the question isn't it. I think it's going to be run by the likes of Nina Jankowicz, Jen Psaki, and Taylor Lorenz.
