Ok...my post /thoughts come up because of the John Kasick news/tweet thread. I used to like the guy, though I didn't think he was electable or Presidential.

Early on I was a Ted Cruz guy, and never thought Trump was presidential material...Cruz couldn't sell himself well enough, but he had the right message most of the time.

In my first ever presidential election I voted for Ross Perot, I forgot he received nearly 20 million votes and certainty costs Bush Sr. his re-election. No Ross, no Clinton...really interesting to reflect on what could have been had Ross decided not to run for office?

I liked Ross, he made a ton of sense to me, and he was super entertaining as well, ..kind of like Trump is today...but I was young and dumb, so what did I know? haha... whatever... :)

I voted for Bob Dole in 1996
I voted for Bush Jr. in 2000
I voted for Bush Jr. in 2004
I voted for McCain in 2008
I voted for Romney in 2012
I vote for Trump in 2016

What I find interesting is neither Bush is all that well liked by many conservatives who now see a lot of issues with the GOP platform, and long time guys like McCain are quickly becoming disliked among traditional GoP voters, so is Romney though he hasn't been a lifer politician...

Bob Dole was a nice man, a bit of a statesman, a vet...probably had no chance against slick Willie. He was the GOP choice so I went with it. I guess he was the GOP establishment pick "it was his turn" ? I don't remember

Now we have another GOP Kasick candidate who is quickly becoming a guy I don't like ...Why? He is an emotional guy, I think he cares about people and the country but I don't know if he gets what the Trump movement is all about? It appears he maybe be too deep in inner GOP politics which I think many conservatives are catching on to is something that must be rooted out of Washington

I have naively defended the GOP and it's candidates for many years...defended the core leaders, I really thought Romney would have been a great president, (good guy, great family, smart, and so on) because I thought we needed a business type guy to take over and lead... We have Trump now and we're seeing the fruit of a take charge CEO type president.

All that to say, sometimes when it comes down to 2 candidates, "our candidate" is not great or not what they seemed to be about either... The 3 candidates I liked the best (Ross, Romney, and Trump) were not politicians early on. hmmmm..but mega successful in the real world before they decided to enter the cesspool of Washington politics.

Lesson? Go with the candidate that makes the most sense rather than one that supposedly has the best chance of winning.

he voted for Perot not the est. candidate.

Like many that vote for the GOP it is for economic or size of gov't issues. We never get smaller gov't but at least they talk(that is all they ever do) about reducing the size.

Trump is not a true conservative, kind of hard to understand the hate it could be a lot worse in terms of policy for the Dems if someone like Pence were calling all the shots.

I still think Romney would have been a better President than Obama. I voted for him for the same reason as you. I wanted someone with a business perspective.

I've been pretty disappointed in the Nominees of the last 20 years in general. I feel like our country has much better people to be president, but they just don't get involved in politics, and for good reason.

More Ross Perot Myth talk in this thread.

Perot voters were voting against the incumbent, GHWBush. As the film documents, most folks who voted for Perot in 1992 would have, with no Perot alternative, either not voted at all or voted for Clinton.

Perot's 19.2% did not cost BUsh re-election.

Perot should have run as a Republican. Trump taught us that the 3rd party has to win from within.

A lot of Reagan Democrats turned on Daddy Bush for slightly raising their taxes (or allowing congress to do so).

Can you believe that was less than a generation ago?

No New taxes did him in.
He negotiated with the dems(stupid on his part)) and they beat him like a rented mule over it.

I learned my lesson this past cycle. I was all in on Rubio bc I thought he stood the best chance of winning the general. Glad I was wrong. Turns out he’s John McCain Jr and we got the opposite in the WH. MAGA!

Yes...

I was with the other 20 million people who saw what Ross did, a giant sucking sensation...

no border
bad trade deficits
exploding national debt

at the time it was 2 trillion dollars

now it's 21 Trillion...

Ross was right...

for me Clinton was never even a consideration...

I like Ross, I knew we need some changes...

I thought 2 trillion was a broke government.

Chicken economics and flow charts was awesome..

So, what did Clinton do in 8 years that was so egregious to you since we're talking about morons?

The contract with america was pretty good, (thanks to newt) the very last time we had a balanced budget and surplus.

Bush Jr. inherited a recession...and the Middle East problems

Well think about what you typed.

When you have 2 choices, Dems or Republicans...
Independents really have no chance, the green party, come on, who is electable? There has not been a strong candidate...

Ross got 20 million votes, that's a bunch of people

yeah, I am probably going with the Republican or not at all...I was tempted to sit out this last election but Supreme court picks are why I voted for Trump...since then, he's impressed me, he's doing a great job.

The Democrats unchecked would have ruined this country by now...it still maybe too late

Bush 41 was a whole lot better than what we got with the Clinton's and the level of corruption we are still dealing with today almost 30 years later...fact.

In retrospect HW Bush was a pretty good POTUS. Could have easily gotten us into the trillion dollar ME adventure his son did but thought better of it, yet still stood firm in the international arena + plus country over party in domestic affairs
