Overdiagnosis.
Basically every socially awkward kid gets put on the spectrum nowadays. I mean, let's be honest, there's a lot of kids that are just ugly or stupid that get a diagnosis of "autism."
It's not because they have some special disorder. It's that they're just not "cool" and able to deal with problems.
I'd be interested in what's causing the drop in hormone levels like testosterone. This is surely causing a variety of developmental issues in young men and probably linked to what's causing the problems in young women.
Could be poor diets. Could be lack of sunshine. Could be chemicals in the environment. (Birth control.) It's really hard to say, because it's likely a combination of multiple things that are part of the modern lifestyle.

I’m not definitely saying it’s vaccines but look at the vaccine schedule from 1986 compared to current schedule.Number of vaccines children get now is
insane.
Maybe it’s Tylenol,after all.
I wonder about microplastics.Round Up in corn, soybeans and oats.
All the screen time children get now.
All the chemicals in our highly processed food.
Whole host,of, things that I wonder about.

A big part of this which has shockingly not been mentioned in this thread yet is the fact that until the last 40 or so years many of these children were just diagnosed as being “retarded” and institutionalized. Mental retardation and before that feeble mindedness were just umbrella terms for countless different disorders. People who are older didn’t grow up around kids with these conditions because those children were sent away.
I posted awhile back on the OT lounge about this, but if you haven’t watched Willowbrook: The Last Great Disgrace I highly recommend it even though it is absolutely gut wrenching. I know Geraldo Rivera has some bad takes, but him exposing the institutions where these children were sent saved thousands of lives of special needs people in the US.

My friend has a son who is non verbal autistic and his sister also has a son who is non verbal autistic. I don't know or claim to know ,but that led me to believe it might be genetic.

What Do You Think Caused the Spike in Autism?
I’m not an expert, but my guess is child neglect and too much TV and electronics. I’m not saying that’s responsible for all of it, but that’s my guess for the big increase. Maybe there is some chemical cause, like in our diet or medicines.

Why do people always jump to vaccines? Think about plastics, air toxics, and any of a million other chemicals we have become bombarded with daily since the industrial revolution.
The increase in autism overlaps with millions of things over time. People pick one of the overlaps and get militant about it.
Heck, there was less diagnosed autism when kids weren’t afraid to drink out of the water hose. I think I’ll blame that.

4. Mating decisions. This one is the most intriguing to me. The autistic brain is a hyper masculine brain. Logical. Calculating. No empathy. Can’t understand non verbal communication. So the hypothesis is that if a female with a masculine brain mates with a man with a masculine brain … you get a hyper masculine brain … autism.
I’m not a medical professional but I worked with people with disabilities for 11 years. You are getting downvoted but there’s absolutely some truth here. No one wants to admit it but very often one of the parents, if you spent time with them, seemed to have some minor social issues. Who wants to admit that?
I disagree completely with this ‘over diagnosis’ but I do agree it’s over celebrated or whatever term you want to use. I think it absolutely helps tremendously to get extra help and funding as early as possible. Even the high functioning kids will do much better with early help.
As a parent what I see, is the reason it is ‘over announced’ is because no parent wants their kid to be 2nd best. So any excuse for a child to not be 1st place is used and that’s one reason. Social media and parents trying to fit their kid in.

You really expect there are medical "experts" hanging out on TDPT board that can "expertly" and honestly answer your question?
Well yeah, just look at how many political experts are on here.

All data was hidden or covered up. People listen to doctors who had no clue what they would do. A complete coverup from manufacture to the doctors- some people are going to jail.

1) pre-natal issues (pre-pregnancy birth control, shite diet by mothers, apparently Tylenol) combined with push to immediate formula instead of breastfeeding
2) avalanche of vaccines at early age
3) push for an "explanation" as to why some kids/people are weird
4) medical/mental health professionals drumming up business by creating the "spectrum"
5) same people helping patients (namely, their parents) game the SSI system by declaring kids disabled

Maybe 1 in 10 is overdiagnosed or misdiagnosed but to pretend there isn't much more autism around today is simply wrong. I didn't grow up with any autistic kids in my class. We didn't have any autistic kids at church. Now you can't find a church or a class that doesn't have one or multiple. Vaccines have turned into a religion and people can't get passed it

So will kids who have trouble with spelling or math, but just "struggling" or being on the lower end of the IQ bell curve doesn't get you any extra education $$$ unless we can slap a name on it.

The prevalence of recreational drug use prior to pregnancy could also be a factor. I have a cousin with a non-verbal autistic son and she was into all kinds of drugs as a teen into her twenties.
