I saw an article this morning teasing that the video is worse than the Rodney King beating.

What's the back story here? In this day and age, why would 5 black cops do that to a black suspect? Is there more to the story than a simple beat down of a suspect?

I think it's odd that they've been teasing and hyping a video release for a week now. Surprised there hasn't been a cinematic trailer.

But yes, the description makes it sound like a beatdown execution which seems like an extremely dumb thing for a group to do knowing you're on video. So we'll see.

Rest assured that those 5 black cops were beating on that 1 black suspect, due to a direct result of systemic white racism.

My question is why wait until 6 pm?

Yeah!! Let’s release it right as darkness is descending on a city already on edge and ready to ignite!

Seems kinda dumb to me.

On the night of Jan. 7, Nichols, a 29-year-old father and FedEx worker who has been described by family as an avid skateboarder, was returning home from a suburban park where he had taken photos of the sunset, according to his family's attorneys. On the way home, he was stopped for reckless driving, according to a statement from the Memphis Police Department. As officers approached Nichols to arrest him, a "confrontation" occurred and Nichols then fled, police said. A second "confrontation" also occurred at some point before Nichols was ultimately arrested, police said.

IMO, if the officers were white we’d already have seen the video by now.

Sounds like a pretty-thorough beatdown.

Yeah, releasing the video right before dark seems like a recipe for fires, looting and general mayhem.

They had a box of Covid vaccines that no one used. Kept dosing him until he died.

This line of thinking implies that a racial angle is the only reason for actual criminal atrocities to ever happen, and that’s ridiculous.

There’s various rumors floating around town but no one actually knows what the backstory is right now.

The "cop attitude" is the "cop attitude," regardless of the melanin levels of the officer(s) in question.

That's true, but what happened to this suspect doesn't happen everyday.

What's unusual about this case? Why did this black man get such a beatdown from black cops?

Pre Rodney King? Sure

Post Rodney King? I don't think so

You specifically asked why 5 black officers would do this to a black guy. That alone implies it would be more understandable had they been white, and maybe you didn’t mean to imply that but that is default what the language you used leads one to believe.

As far as the motive, there is no telling and there’s a lot of speculation. Pointless to discuss until more facts are present.

If anything regarding the racial angle, I’d argue that the officers subconsciously thought they could get away with it BECAUSE they were black with the victim being black. Had they not beat him to death they’d probably be right. There’s a bunch of bad shite that happens in Memphis that no one cares about usually.

I'm implying that in a post-Rodney King, post-George Floyd America one would expect that the police would be hyper sensitive about how they treat black suspects, if for no other reason than the likelihood of an overreaction from the public.

By mentioning the race of the officers I'm eliminating the racial angle. The cops beat this man to death. It wasn't race, so what was it?

I wonder if Memphis has some black cops that were in gangs when younger. I wonder if they had some pre-cop history with Tyre.

That’s not exactly how we’ve seen this play out with white cops.

They definitely wouldn’t have been fired and charged by now if they were white. They’d be on paid admin leave.
