The few eighty year old men I know would not be coming home from the hospital after having their skull fractured from a hammer blow.

If it's a closed fracture and there's no bleeding, fluid collection, increase in intra-cranial pressure or continuous mental status changes, there's no point in staying in the hospital. In fact, had he presented to the ED two days after the assault with a fractured skull and negative head imaging, he would either discharge from the ED that day or stay maybe one night on an observation unit at most.
