People should read this.
The mom is the cause of this, not the prosecution or judge. Her trashy arse changed her story multiple times, and the defense would have had a great day in court with all that crap.
That said, the DA's office should have rolled the dice and if he won, he won. It was chicken shite not to at least try him.
But at the end of the day, the mom caused this whole mess by lying her arse off.

Okay, but why the lax sentence? Or was that part of the plea?

The judge is quoted as saying that she did not "like" the deal, but that she understood it ... given the evidentiary problems.
The mother put the judge and the prosecutor in this quandary. No one else. They are being attacked by imbeciles who cannot be bothered to read the story, because SHE was a horrible parent who failed to protect her child.

Probably not. He killed a white baby. The thugs are fine with that.

From reading other articles, sounds like the prosecution was afraid they could not get a conviction, so they offered this guy an Alford plea. The judge was not happy about the deal, but I guess she had no choice.
Sounds like the only evidence was the mother of the child, and she already changed her story multiple times, lying about the child's injuries, trying to cover for this guy. So the prosecution did not feel confident in getting a conviction based on her testimony.
I still think they should have gone to trial and risked it instead of giving him a slap on the wrist for murdering a baby.
The silver lining is that there is no way this guy keeps clean for the 5 years of probation. He will almost certainly end up in prison or maybe just get murdered.

He fricks up in one way or the other within a year, and prosecutor files an MTR. (You KNOW that the prosecutor AND the judge are just WAITING for that inevitable frick-up).
He is in prison within 18 months.

Penrod would say it’s just another isolated incident.

Basically the prosecutors are to blame. However, the female judge did not have to accept the deal, but did anyway. She protested from the bench that she didn't like it, but ultimately caved because her prosecutors said they would likely lose a jury trial.
quote:
According to reporting from the Las Vegas Review-Journal and other outlets:
Problems with the evidence
Prosecutors told the judge that weaknesses in the evidence — especially inconsistent witness statements and a lack of direct eyewitness testimony — raised the risk that a jury might not convict him at trial on the more serious charges.
Plea deal negotiation
Because of those evidentiary concerns, prosecutors agreed to accept the voluntary manslaughter plea rather than risking an acquittal. Under Nevada law voluntary manslaughter is a less serious offense than first-degree murder and carries a sentencing range that can include probation.
Judge followed the agreement
The judge said she disagreed with the plea deal and with the probation outcome, but because the prosecution and defense agreed to it, she felt obligated to impose the negotiated sentence.

You rarely see this type of shite with people who don't have several tattoos. Trashy as frick

If it were my grandchild, I would gladly send all three to hell and spend the rest of my life in prison sleeping like a baby.
I would make it painful, similar to Gerard Butler's character in the Citizen movie.

Someone asked me a few years ago why I don't have any tattoos. I told her that I am not a gang member or a pirate, so I didn't figure I needed one.
EDIT:
I want to see a photo of the mom. $100 says that she has her share of trashy tattoos as well.

Biggest villain in this saga is the mom.
1. Hooked up with thug.
2. Allowed thug to be around child.
3. Lied for thug.
4. fricked-up prosecutor's case.
Sorry, but the thug is just the scorpion crossing the river. Thugs gonna thug. Mom should have known better.

She was afraid of him.
shite like this should be a lesson to women, but it won't be. Stay away from obvious thugs. Tattoos all over the neck and face are a pretty good indicator that the guy is a fricking idiot.
