Where are you guys coming from when you say 'it's not illegal to be undocumented'? Your comrades say that since it's only a civil offense, it's not a crime.

What they say is true, but debatable. What's debatable is does that refer to "while in the process" of crossing the border. In other words they haven't established themselves in the US then it is civil and not criminal.
Sort of like possessing burglary tools standing at someone's door is still not burglary.
However, there is one little line in there they conveniently ignore that is in most, as in vast majority, of the Federal system of civil penalties that says:
"Civil penalties under this subsection are in addition to, and not in lieu of, any criminal or other civil penalties that may be imposed."
