Either they were very inexperienced, or they "shaded" the truth. Self-extubations are usually avoidable. They are often the result of nursing/RT oversight, and they can be quite dangerous when they occur. Hence RN reticence, perhaps, to be fully transparent with you. In defense of the staff in your incident, though SE's are not frequent, they are not exceedingly rare, even in the best of units.

Well, I didn't really expect them to say they screwed up. I'd guess that is not something said in ICU's to a patient's family.

Fortunately she didn't need it reinserted. They had tried taking her off the previous day but it wasn't possible then.

She had really been fighting it all along and I don't know if her condition restricted just how sedated she could be. Some of the things she described seeing kinda blew my mind. Walls on fire and such. I think the nurses said they called the drugs she was on "nightmare" drugs.

Because being on an ace-inhibitor, like lisinopryl, is raising concerns due to its ability to change an aceI receptor into an ace2 receptor

Differing views on this. The European Society of Cardiology thinks there is no scientific basis for saying ACE inhibitors promote coronavirus, and suggest that they might have a beneficial effect.

It's my understanding that COVID needs ACE2 to enter the cell wall. Wouldn't ACE inhibitors help suppress ACE2 and therefore help protect your cells from being infected by COVID?

Help me out here, please.

I don't really understand posts like this. This forum isn't monolithic, nor is the information coming from experts. There are people here saying it's nothing, people saying we're in the first days of The Stand and everything in between.

That you know an outlier doesn't change the statistics. I realize we all react differently when something "hits home", but one 45 year old is statistically insignificant and doesn't change what's happening on the cruise ship, for example.

And AGAIN...Nobody knows this man's comorbidities.....Does he have HIV, Hepatitis,,Diabetes, Positive TB????? We already know from his pics he was definitely obese.

Non medical people speaking on medical issues don't have all the facts and are just plain fear mongering...

Studies are being done on this right now...those on ACE meds may fair better and those ethnic groups with more receptors like orientals may fair worse....

Would explain alot in China.

I love how this thread here and on the OT both turned into discussing how fat the guy is.

also studies saying they may fair worse.

ACEi inhibit concentrations of the neurotransmitter ATII which may cause cells to upregulate the receptor AT2

True. 90% agreement on 90% of all issues is not TECHNICALLY “monolithic.”

Again, true. More than 90% agreement is not full unanimity.

Fat people can be in great shape...see Offensive Linemen... but for the most part it points to a ton of comorbid conditions that can compromise the patient...

Prof Hugh Montgomery, UCL Professor of Intensive Care Medicine, UCL, said:
“There is no proof yet that the use of ACE inhibitors worsen Coronovirus infection.  There are theoretical reasons, in fact, why they might offer benefit in serious disease.  I would not advocate people ceasing such medication until the evidence has been weighed and clear guidance issued.”

I choose to believe the positive research and not the fear mongers trying to scare everyone on BP meds...

True.

But it did drive home the point of social distancing. The importance of which I personally blew off bc I vehemently distrust anything that the media spews.

I don’t know Mark Frilot.

However, his being diagnosed so close in time to Mardi Gras, caused me to realize that we are supposed to be isolating ourselves to prevent the spread. Even if he wasn’t spending 2 wks shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of people on the Parade Route, he lives in NOLA so he was definitely in contact with people who had.

Just a suggestion that maybe we can let down our media paranoia and do what is in our community’s best interest. That’s all. I have no desire to unwittingly pass this along to my parents, who are in their 70s or yours for that matter.

I'm not paranoid of the media, I just understand it. They love driving panic, and if they can drive panic and scratch a political itch then that's a two-for-1 as far as they're concerned. But I can understand that and at the same time understand that social distancing is smart and can be carried out to varying degrees depending on your risk aversion and circumstances. "The media is full of crap" and "this should be taken seriously" aren't mutually exclusive statements.

If this guy, who doesn't live in Nola, caught this during mardis gras. Then we all have it.
