In your image, the “translucent” appearance is coming from lighting passing through a thin edge of stone with a light-colored matrix. That behavior is typical of:
Calcite/alabaster (very common in Egypt)
Or sometimes fine limestone / travertine
Granite (quartz + feldspar + mica) does not transmit light like that, even in very thin sections. It stays opaque.

Comes from this guy's project. Good work they're doing too. They're laser scanning these pre-Dynastic vases and coming up with near perfect symmetry on vases that are upwards of 6,000 years old.
