Waiting to be drafted during a time of war? Do you have a better chance of avoiding being a grunt and fodder for a grenade dropped from a drone?

Are there exemptions for college or professional school?

One is you could decide which service you choose to enlist in. Not all services are equal in being on the front lines of a war if that is what you mean?

That’s a good point. I guess during Vietnam it essentially luck of the draw as far as which branch

There are so many boys on ADHD meds these days it's going to be hard to find many who qualify for service.

Following because I’m interested. I’m aged out but my son may be of age if the world gets crazy.

My current “plan” is to make sure he makes good grades and be valuable for roles outside of infantry or front line instead of volunteering (engineering, project management, logistics, etc.)

Would like to think they consider the skills of individual they are drafting but no clue.

During Vietnam I knew a lot of guys who volunteered to pick their service instead of being drafted. I knew one guy who joined the Coast Guard to avoid the draft. His logic was simple. He had family in Fla close to a CG base and he knew he wouldn't be going to Vietnam like Army, Navy and Air Force.

You pick the service branch.

If you score high enough on the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) You get to pick your MOS (job).

If you have a degree, you could qualify for Officer Training School (commissioned officer, not enlisted).

Avoidance of the draft would be for the powerful, wealthy and influential, just as it's always been.

If a draft was reinstated today, there would be no college deferments and the health issues that would've kept you out in the past, would no longer matter.

Also, there would be extradition agreements with Mexico and Canada that would have your arse brought back to stand trial and go to prison, or take point and catch the first bullet.

No more Mister nice guy with Uncle Sam. He wants you, and he will indeed have you.

Prepare your sons to leave The Americas for good, or injure them in such a way that they're useless to the American corporate war machine. This will be the only way to avoid the new draft.

Not sure about Vietnam, but in WWII they typically didn’t. You filled the hole most needed that you qualified for.

Dad enlisted rather than be drafted during the Korean police action. By doing so he avoided combat and was allowed to sign up with the Army Corps of Engineers, with his deployment in Germany.

There's actually lots of exemptions: college, last son to carry on the family, medical, political, marital even.

In the new draft, I believe all that shite goes away. If this country is ever in a position again to where it needs to draft an army, then that means globally shite has gone sideways badly. There would be no fricking around on the part of the United States Government.

You want out of the draft? Well then buy your way out, otherwise you're fricked.

“ Or reserves”
During Viet Nam only ones that got in reserves or National Guard were those that came from wealthy families or had connections.

That did not necessarily get you out of high risk assignments. A budy of mine was a Ground Bombardier in the AF in Vietnam. He was on the ground in the strike zone area directing bomb drops. He had no idea how many tons of bombs he dropped on the Ho Chi Min Trail...

Didn't the Coast Guard have sailors and ships off the coast of Nam and up in the Mekong River? Memory is a little fuzzy on that.

My dad also enlisted rather than being drafted. He volunteered for the 82nd Airborne. During the Korean War, the 82nd was kept as a reserve force to respond to any threats around the world, so he didn't see combat in Korea or anywhere else.
I had three uncles that were drafted in WW2 and from my understanding when they were inducted they were questioned about any special skills they might have. One was at the time working for a wooden boat builder, so he was assigned to one of the landing craft transports in the Pacific and they would repair the landing craft that got shot up. Another had worked for the local embalmer so he was assigned to Graves Registration. I guess because he had experience dealing with dead bodies. The third one was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division and saw combat action in North Africa and then in Europe.
