Huge loss for teachers unions in California case
Good.
"Tenure" at the high school level is asinine. Tenure started at major universities so experienced researchers could be free to research controversial topics without fear of reprisal, political pressure, etc. It has nothing to do with high school teaching.

A court ruling on Tuesday striking down job protections for teachers in California is a big blow to unions — and will likely fuel political movements across the nation to eliminate teacher tenure...
Treu found that the statutes permit too many grossly incompetent teachers to remain in classrooms across the state — and found that those teachers shortchange their students by putting them months or years behind their peers in math and reading
Good.

Yes...and...?

Oh wait: I thought you meant a place for crazy people. Do you mean teachers sit in a room and do nothing?
Yes - it drives me insane. I'm probably more conservative than a lot of people here when it comes to education.

There is only one reason they exist. Lawyer fees.

Like the teachers in NY who sat around and played games all day while getting paid as part of their disciplinary action?

Exactly. However, given the state of education in this country, I wouldn't have a problem with some sort of tenure-like status that can be given to teachers who are truly exemplary. In this case, it would be to protect excellent teachers from reprisal when they enforce discipline and impose harsh grading (or what students/parents perceive to be "harsh grading").
Excellent teachers who actually know what the hell they are doing shouldn't have to worry about administrative bullshite and possible sanctions stemming from punishing little johnny or giving a student an "F."
Then again, if all high school principals and other administrators were solid leaders and didn't cave into inane parental complaints, we probably wouldn't have to worry about this as much.

Keep dreaming. It will get appealed then tossed at some point. If it somehow holds up in the State system, the unions will take it to the Federal level and get it struck down by the 9th Circus.

Saw this story earlier and thought about seeing how the ptards felt about higher-ed tenure. Basically agree with your position at university level, but below that it is indefensible IMO.

True, but you have to understand the history. It's a perk. It's a substitute for money. It started in the mid west almost 100 years ago.. Ohio. Teachers threatened to strike. State didn't have money from taxpayers. So, they offered tenure in the deal. Once tenure became part of 'pay' it could not be legally taken away without a LOT of litigation.

I understand that ...but it's still silly.

Good news for the kids. Bad for the bad teachers.
Now if we can just fire the low-lifes that committed fraud in the VA, it'll get the ball rolling purge the government payrolls of slackers.

Absolutely not. If a school tried to fire and outstanding teacher, there would an uprising by parents who know what that teacher has done for their kids.
Also, I have seen teachers who have gotten lazy over time, once they got tenure. No reason to give them tenure of any kind. Not needed.

Teacher's Unions are the number one reason our education system is in the shape it is in.
In my Parish, 80% to 90% of the entire education budget goes to salary and benefits.
They suck up most of the money, protect bad teachers and act as a firebreak against reform.

Its #3
#2 is the huge increase in one parent families.
#1 like a bullet is 1 and 2 parent families treating the education system like govt child care and having little to no involvement in it.

I'd make your number 1 number 3a. Your number 3, I'd make 3b. I'd leave number 2 as number 2. And I'd say #1 is shitty curriculum which doesn't have good data behind it but is driven solely by educational theory.

I think this will have bipartisan support throughout the country. I think most people agree that unions and especially teacher's unions are too powerful.
In reading comments, very few are taking up for unions (other than the occasional teacher or super-liberal).
