What precedent does a ruling like this set?

I'm sure many NBA owners are prejudiced against some group...
I don't condone what Sterling said by any means, but I'm not sure lifetime ban was necessary considering the man is in his 80's and now you have a precedent set where signs of prejudice lead to an essential death penalty.
Maybe, I'm overthinking this.

It just means that the laws in this country or the constitution don't matter and people aren't allowed to have their own beliefs or feelings. Apparently none of the players or other owners have never said anything racist in the privacy of their own home.
As far as precedent goes, if a player's ever on tape calling someone a honky, I think you have to ban them for life now.

If the players were held to this same standard the games would have to be decided by H-O-R-S-E

Don't talk no shite, won't be no shite.

I think so.
Mark Cuban already said he is 100% behind Silver.
From his Twitter:
quote:
I agree 100% with Commissioner Silvers findings and the actions taken against Donald Sterling

If you are referring to the first amendment, then you are off base.
All that does is protect your voice from getting you arrested.

The NBA doesn't even know. That's why Silver said this was an isolated action by the league and in no way sets a rule. It's a cop out.

It doesn't protect you from having your belongings taken from you because of it? Apparently Donald Sterling is the only racist attendee of Clippers games. Now that he won't be there all the races can live in harmony.

If I had a bunch of money, I'd probably skip the NBA and purchase a team in another sport. Cuban has to be shitting bricks, he has tons of exposure in running businesses and being on TV.

To me, the slippery slope argument is almost willfully ignorant in this specific instance.
Lets be real here. Kicking Sterling out of the league isn't going to start some lunch line of owners trying to kick their peers out of the league. For many reasons. Not the least of which is fear of turnabout being fair play.
This is literally a once in a lifetime type of situation, if that.

Ding, ding, ding. This is punishment for years of bad behavior and worse actions. That tape was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Proves a double standard exists in the NBA. Sterling is a bigot, but he's not allowed to have any private beliefs as despicable as they may seem.
I don't recall any legitimate claims of him mistreating his players of African decent so horribly, until these tapes came out. Now all of a sudden tons of instances of him mistreating players come out. It's typical victim status and its pretty disgusting to be honest.
Guy is trash, but I've heard plenty worse come from the other direction and get ignored.

Banning Sterling for 5 years is so earth shattering

I think it's safe to say any owner who doesn't refer to it as "the Instagram" will be fine

While I don't agree with what he said, the NBA better treat everyone the exact same going forward. Do you think Kobe Bryant would get a lifetime ban for making a gay slur now? Hell no.
