The passion of U.S. soccer fans seems fake...

It seems like they are trying too hard to act like soccer fans in Europe and South America, and it doesn't seem genuine.

Is that accurate or am I off base?

Soccer in this country has grown greatly in the last 5 years.

Plus this game is against Mexico so the crowd is going to be more "live" than normal.

Spot on.

- Belting out the National Anthem not in sync with the singer.
- Seven Nation Army
- And now they are doing the Utah State "I believe" cheer.

Pretty accurate.

Well, not fake...but it seems like they really have to talk themselves into it...and mimic what they see the big boys doing. In fact, MLS pretty much tried to turn American soccer into Euro-soccer lite...with those dumb arse nonsensical names and handing out soccer scarves to fans.

There's nothing American about MLS. Except fans pretending they're not American.

Sort of like Americans overseas when Bush comes up in conversation.

Portland and Seattle fans are pretty damn genuine.

Well, for example... they are doing all of this singing and whatnot in the stands right now...

No fans in any other sport in America do that kind of thing.

And it isn't like the United States has a long, rich soccer tradition where all of these things are old tradition that has been done for ages and it's just being passed down.

It seems more like an "astroturf" movement rather than a "grassroots" movement...

They are wild, I agree.

I agree. It's not fake, but it doesn't seem naturally American. Definitely copycat

I'd rather have singing in the stands than silence. And what does America do better than take things from other cultures and make them our own?

That's great... but completely beside the point of the thread...

As the games progress the US fans definitely become more natural and revert back to American football type fans.

The singing is from one area of the stadium I am willing to bet.

People cheer in football on defense and after big plays, random cheers of defense and after made baskets in basketball, after hits or big defensive plays in baseball. American soccer fans do the same things, but they use songs during the downtime.

It comes from the "supporters section". Mostly the American Outlaws.

Example:

They won't even call themselves fans.

They have to be "supporters" because that's what Man U and Liverpool have..."supporters" in Euro soccer.

Further example:

(Supporter groups) - Columbus, OH

The Hudson Street Hooligans is an officially recognized supporters group for the Columbus Crew, one of the original ten Major League Soccer (MLS) franchises.

The Hudson Street Hooligans call section 141 of Columbus Crew Stadium home, amidst the designated supporters group corner section known affectionately (or infamously) as the Nordecke.

The Hooligans’ first mission is to create an atmosphere at Crew games that not only encourages the players on the field, but provides a distinctly raucous atmosphere that is akin to what one traditionally finds at world class stadiums across the globe.

Now how lame and fake is that? You actually name your "supporter group" the Hooligans.

Being an MLS fan feels like dork-Halloween.

They're playing make-believe. It's incredibly silly. I don't understand why they don't behave like american sports fans, which is what they are.

You don't see the Far East Asian countries rooting for their baseball teams the same way we do.

Utah State didn't come up with that cheer.

We pretty much invented basketball, football, and baseball so we were able to do things like we wanted. We didn't invent hockey or soccer because we took them from places where they were already wildly popular. We use the same terminology that Canada uses for hockey and the same for soccer. What's wrong with that?

Except for the whole playoff and salary cap thing.

Oh, and moving stadia away from the Barrios and into the suburbs (Dallas Burn...)

When Bush comes up in conversation here my response is the same as overseas.

But I'm not an Ugly American, unlike most of this fricking site.
