Where do you think current basketball, baseball, or football fans learned to behave at those respective events? Surely each individual fan came to its own objective conclusion and didn't just imitate their predecessors.
I believe each sport cultivates a specific, unique decorum based on the nature and idiosyncrasies of that sport.

The sport wasn't founded in the US, for it to appear as such would be fake IMO

The fans you see in the stands have been cheering for and loving this sport before most Americans even understood that the World Cup was more important than the Olympics.
Those same fans watch European clubs because that's the best version of the sport out there.
To say the US fan support is not organic or not homegrown is simply not true. These people you think are "trying too hard" supported these players and this league when no one else gave a frick. Their passion is real. Their dedication is real.
It might seem strange to you. Hell, maybe they are a little overexuberant in their singing and chanting, but they are true fans. It's not like they grew up following those teams. They weren't born into a dynasty. They built it from the ground up.

No. Not really. Soccer was the original name for the sport. When the lower and middle class took it over, it became known as football. In America, it was primarily played at rich, New England schools, so they still used the original uppercrust term.
So, Americans are actually correct when they refer to it as Soccer and not Football.

This thread is uber-silly. Mimicry of European and South American fans is hardly a bad thing. We are going a long way in creating our own identity through this mimicry. Soccer in America won't be like other sports, because the sport itself is so different. It isn't a social event in the same way as other American sports.
The singing, chanting, bouncing etc. are all fun things to do. I don't see anything un-American about it.

Soccer was an abbreviation of Association Football. The word 'soccer' differentiated it with other codes of football. Neither version is incorrect.

Oh I agree that the debate is all academic and really just a minor point in the history of the sport.
But it wasn't called football until the plebes got ahold of it.
