i really regret swapping my blades out for normal blades last swap. i will never NOT get a mulching kit from now on.

Deck definitely needs to be welded.
I didn't have a problem until my wife and oldest started "helping" me by cutting the grass.
Mower has been jacked up ever since.
12 years of nothing
Last 3... broken choke, dented deck alignment, left out in a monsoon for a week. New switch. Now it wont hold a charge.
But they are helping...

I would make sure it has the Parker hydraulics on it for dam sure. Othen than that all the other advice is good stuff

Serious question: Have you ever tried cutting 4 or 5 acres with a 4 foot pull finish mower? I think a 25hp tractor would struggle with a 5 footer (I had a 26hp Kubota and it could barely handle a 5 foot shredder) I think a tractor that small would be better suited for a belly mower and the FEL. I think it took me about 4 hours to cut 4 acres with the bush hog and it sucked. I bought a 5 foot 28hp Kubota diesel ztr .

A ZT is more compact and maneuverable than a tractor. I have both, my personal preference on my property is to use the ZT only thing I mow with the tractor is trails. I guess it comes down to personal preference and how land is laid out. If i could only have one or the other I'd have to got with the tractor for the reasons you stated above it's more versatile.

A zero turn will always be faster. It takes a real tractor with a big finish mower and cooperative land layout to be faster than a zero turn.

Why do you think a welded deck is better? John deere 7 iron decks are stamped out of a thicker steel than Gravely ztx decks.

I mowed 5 acres with a 25 hp Kubota and a 5’finsh mower for 4 years.Took forever,had lots of shite to mow around-trees,flower beds,outbuildings.
25 hp handled th 5’ mower fine.
Got a zero turn,takes me 1/3rd the time,

I just retired my 7’ bush hog for a 72” Ferris ZT. What took 4 hrs now takes 2.

I have a Bobcat 23/52. Price was solid. Mower is built well and they offer 5 yrs same as cash financing. No complaint. It has the Kawasaki motor

Don’t think it needs to be a commercial grade, but 5 acres , get a big deck to cut down on cutting time.
I’ve been cutting 2 acres for 3 years with a 54” toro residential and it does fine. Done in 40 minutes. Have 97 hrs on it with no problems.

We recently bought a Gravely ZT XL 52" with Kohler 7000 to mow 3ish acres.
Has been working really well.
What advantage do you think the mulching kit has? Or did you just get blades?

Paying 10k for a residential mower is pretty costly, if cost isn’t an issue I personally would buy a Scag, Exmark, or Ferris over BB mowers just from personal experience.

A ZT also does a nicer job and is less maint. IMO

After looking at everything I’m pretty much sold on a 54” 400 Series Kubota. Do you have any experience with the fuel injected models?

I’m about the same - Scag Tiger Cat 2 , 60”. I cut around 5-6 acres that have a lot of uneven spots, pine cones, branches, lots of roots I hit. For a while I thought I really overbought. Then one day I cut my dad’s lot with his $3-4k zero turn - think it was a Bad Boy. Couldn’t believe how cheap and flimsy it felt compared to my Scag. Zero regrets after that. My Scag is a frickin’ tank. I take shitty care of it. 6 years of mowing and I’ve done like 3 oil/filter changes and just changed an air filter for the first time. Runs like the day I bought it.

I don’t. I’m a carb man when it comes to small engines. Do you happen to know which engine comes on the mower you’re looking at? I know Kawasaki released some new engines recently and if it’s one of those I’ve heard good things but it’s early so nobody really knows how they’ll hold up.
