Pretty quiet up here. He had a young 4 or 6 point that he had a shot at but passed to let him grow a few years.

He would have taken a doe (we need to thin the herd) but never had one walk out.

Passed on a lot of does and yearlings and a spike. Had a grand time.

Well, I don’t have a kid, but I was at deer camp.
Only thing I killed was a lot of beers.

Only kid who is left at camp shot at a doe but missed.
It’s sad how many kids were always at deer camp when I was young, compared to how it is now.

Why pass on a lot of does?

Because I see 50-50 does and bucks this early in the season, and the bucks are still in groups so I could have had 2-4 bucks roll out at any time.

I have a decent deer numbers on the property, and room to safely take a couple of does depending on what the neighbors do. I also have a couple of landowners guests who might want to take a doe, so I wait and see what the numbers look like later in the year.

My brother, older nephew and I were supposed to bring out my youngest nephew and 3 of his friends. Two of them cancelled.
Anyways we show up to the spot, throw out decoys and all wait for it to get closer to shooting time when we were gonna leave the boys in the grass and take the boats to the bank. We hear geese overhead and get into a discussion on whether or not goose season was open. One kid pulls up regs on his phone. Reads "Nov 6 youth and veterans only...". My brother and I just stare at each other now realizing I could be hunting but instead all my shite is at home.
They got 4 wood ducks and a ringneck and missed God knows how many. Hell I could have killed wood ducks standing in boat on the bank.
But it all worked out for the best cause my nephew got his first band. Drake woodie. So in the end I would not have changed how it worked out.

So you didn’t let a kid shoot a doe? Or this was you hunting yourself?

My son killed a doe. His buddy killed a doe. The dads killed a lot of beer and bourbon.

Middle son shot his first deer a 3 point 94 lb monster buck and he couldn’t be happier. Gonna make some ground meat with it tomorrow.

My girl got a spike with her crossbow, at 30 yards. She had 2 really nice bucks come in before that and she just took too long to take a shot, she’s 7, and everything has to be perfect for her to shoot… She wears on my patience, but she’s doing great for her age..

Didn’t I already make it clear we passed on the does?

If you are upset that I didn’t let my 8 year old shoot a doe on the first evening he got in the stand, get over it.

He had a great weekend and we spent all evening Friday and all day Saturday together hunting, working on the property and eating cheeseburgers and onion rings.

I’m in area 1, at no time was I on the gun Friday or the crossbow Saturday.

Kids want success and opportunities. No better time to kill does than early season. If you want the kid to take to deer hunting, let them shoot. Very few properties in Area 1 that don’t need a doe killed.
