You can only have one

If you could only have one artificial lure and one live bait to use in freshwater as well as saltwater, what would it be? I would choose a 1/2 oz chartreuse shiner rattle trap and my live bait would be live shrimp.

Beetle spin or rooster tail

Gizzard shad because everything eats them, the come tiny to large, they are free/easy to catch and they live in both fresh and brackish water.
Artificial is the tough one. Creme 2" soft plastic swimbait in white will catch just about every us freshwater fish including trout and most saltwater fish too.
BUT, can't really fish it topwater. Which may not produce as many fish but is 300% more fun.
So if topwater, give me standard size skitterpop in silver/black back. Not a durable as some topwaters and would need new hooks for saltwater but the effectiveness is unmatched, IMO.
Honestly, a tackle box with a bunch of each bait and some swivels weights and kahle hooks and you would be set for pretty much everywhere (excluding bream)

Probably a swimbait or hair jig for artificial and a live blueback herring

Well, if I can only have one artificial bait for both dress and salt it would have to be a tsunami 3inch swim bait in either black back or shad colored with a black dot near the head area. I have caught specks, reds, bass, flounder, blue and channel catfish, black drum, Sacalait, and a few little tunny fish.( similar to Bonita).
Live bait without a doubt would be gizzard shad if fresh. If not that then live gulf killifish(cocohoe)
With those baits I can consistently catch fish I just may not catch tons of fish but the swim bait often catches specs in the 15-18 inch range instead of a bunch of 11 inch school trout.

Group I ran around with insisted that my 8 year old daughter tag along to fish off bridges in St Pete. I always put the first live shrimp on. When that was taken she'd go to the bucket and take one floating at the top. Dead as could be ...hook her own shrimp and out fish all of us ....
I choose dead shrimp.
I choose dead shrimp.

I rarely fish salt water, but if i'm guessing either a spook or a jerkbait. I fish jerkbait year round for bass and my buddy was wearing out trout with them last week.
