Anywhere to get a water pump local to BR before the weekend? Is that an easy repair for a first time through? Thx

Is it overheating? If not you may just have a clogged line. I have to run 200lb mono up mine a couple of times a year. It's really easy to remove the hose and make sure it is not clogged up.

I have to imagine the impeller a very common part at almost any repair shop or even West Marine

Thank you. Getting some white smoke now and seeing some black oil in the bucket. Not great.

Cleaned out the telltale port. Looks good there.

Look up @ThatBoatGuy on Youtube.

All the dude does is make videos about working on those small Yamahas.

Mine will not pee on muffs but has a Skrong stream when submerged. I keep 4’ of trimmer line in a hatch just in case I pickup some shell.
Any place should have an impeller & West Marine is Ch 7.

Have you been starting the motor out of the water? That's usually what burns up the rubber impeller.

You can probably just replace the rubber impeller for $25 instead of the whole water pump.

Looks like you could get it by tomorrow through a NAPA auto parts store. They stock some marine parts. https://www.napaonline.com/en/search?text=yamaha%20impeller&referer=v2

Greenwell Springs Marine has them in stock. At least they did 4 or 5 years ago.

Cajun Outboards in Plaquemine should have them too.

It's a very easy repair, just drop the lower unit and it's right there. Make sure you get the shift cam back in the right way.

Go on https://yamahaonlineparts.com/ and enter your motor's serial number to get the correct part number.

It's good maintenance to change them once a year. Yours probably looks like this:

Easy to change. Just slide everything up the driveshaft

That's likely where that black goop is coming from. Gonna swap them out . Thanks.

We had one last something like 15 years in a smaller mercury. But yes, its definitely good practice to change it every year. They're a cheap part and simple to replace. Might as well change the lower unit oil while you have it off. I find it much easier to do on a bench vs on the back of the boat.

Yep, I'm going on about 3 years on my current one. As long as you don't start the motor without water, they last.
It drives me nuts when I see guys at the boat launch firing up the motor while they're waiting in line.

very easy job, especially on that size motor. I'd suggest making a chock to rest the lower unit on while you work.

Thought this thread would have gone in a different direction by now.

I had thought about that. Assuming I need to hold it relatively vertical to slide everything on. This what you mean? I was gonna pull some boards out a pallet and set it between two saw horses.

Have a ratchet strap ready over the top of the motor so once you slide the lower unit on most of the way you can hold it in place with the strap. That can take the weight while you line everything up good to slide it on the rest of the way. I had to turn the key a sec to align the spindles so it would slide up.

Make sure lube your shaft good before sliding it in
Lube the bolts and prop shaft also.

Managed to get the lower unit off nice and easy. Now on second impeller (one from napa and one Yam OEM) that will not slide on flush to the shaft. Looks like the impeller grooved the shaft when it burnt and will need to be sanded down. Always something lol.

Was there anything left to the old impeller?

Did you lube it good?
There is a key way alot and a key, make sure it’s there or it will only spin in the shaft.
