Was walking near the chattahoochee and suddenly the dog jumped back and their was a copperhead coiled up in middle of trail showing its tongue. He got within inches of it before we noticed. Not sure if it struck be dog didn't make a noise. Just thought I'd ask you gentleman if I would know for a fact he got bit through a cry or whimper. Checking for bite marks now.
I'll work on getting a GDCK pic uploaded

I would think the pup would yelp or you'd see at least a small spot or 2 of blood from the bite

If you see swelling give the dog benydral, unless hit in a main artery the dog should be fine.

I'm not questioning your ID at all.
Did copperheads change appearances or did I, as a kid mis-identify some?
I though copperheads were relatively small snakes, that were really kinda "copper color". Was I wrong?
Oh, sorry to hi-jack. I flunked out of DVM in Chem 1002 and Trig in about grade 14.

I had a lab that got bit in the face. Swipe up hard as a rock for a couple days then went away. She never missed a beat

I don't claim to be an expert so open to suggestions as to something more likely.

I've seen bright and dull colored copperheads

my lab jumped back when struck by a cottonmouth. Couldn't tell he was bit until later that night when his head swole up like a cantaloupe. He survived though. they are tough.

What hooch park were you walking in?

Growing up I had two weimeraners and an old basest hound. They were roaming around the lake and happened on a few moccasins. Weimeraners were prety agile but the old Bassett - let's just say they wore his arse out.
Poor thing swole like a basketball but never checked up. I imagine there would be a yelp at impact but that's about it.

This! If it keeps swelling, take the dog to a Vet. They will flood a IV under the skin and a few drugs.

Was it hotter than a hoochie coochie?

No, and the strike was lightning quick. No bite and chew, just a slap. He did jump back and left it alone though.

They get dark like that before shedding. They are bright after shedding.

That is definitely a copperhead

Agree that if swelling is seen it will be a clear sign he was bitten. Disagree on Benadryl . Not helpful for snake bites as histamine isn't what you're combatting in that situation. The venom of copperheads acts as an anticoagulant and that's why you see swelling - the blood vessels are leaking and this isn't helped by an antihistamine. This is also why it's useless to try and cut the bite marks if you get bit. You're just making it worse
