Thx! To be clearer, surprising him with the offer to buy boat. Over to him to shop and make it happen. All his decisions from there.

Hear your point. Agree.

Ask Alxtgr, he’s got the nicest one yet.

Sorry, was not clear. Offer to buy is the surprise. Over to him for all decisions. He will own. His decisions.

I’d just like to add that you are awesome for doing this for your son in law.

I have one request for this thread and the op. Please follow up with a pic of the boat and/or tell us how this venture ends.

You obviously like the guy. Make the whole endeavor an experience of something you two can do together.

Personally, I would tell him I was buying the boat but want him involved since he will be free to use it whenever he wants and knows more than me about boats. Shop together, pick what he suggests and then hand him the keys at closing.

That would be the way I would do it.

Let me give you some advice as a financial guy for 25+ years. Buy the boat and give it to your daughter. The son in law has free use of that boat whenever he wants it. But God forbid he finds himself buried in another woman in a year, you want that boat to have been a gift to HER, not him. At that point she walks away with your gift to her. I hate to be this way but I've seen this too many times.

If fishing in Texas, I would suggest a good used glass boat for handling rough water. FB marketplace and sites like Bass Boat Central are good places to start your search. 30k should get you a decent 19-20’ rig. Look for lower hours on motor and possibly some decent electronics including FFS with lithium batteries.

Of course this will not be an easy search, but there are deals to be had if you’re patient. Stay away from Evinrude!

Got bored and did a quick search in that area. This to me would be a decent setup for a first timer.

The problem today is not the boat cost but the accessories. Maybe get the biggest best boat for 30k with bare minimum assesories and let him add those as he can. Accessories alone can run 20k+

Dear Lord Baby Jesus, I pray that my FIL has discovered TD without my knowledge. Amen.

An Xpress is a great boat, but I'd consider it somewhat budget. Boats in general are just crazy expensive.

I had to sell my last boat through divorce, but will be replacing it within the next few years and will have my eyes on a Blazer Bay center console (multiple models I like) in the $60K range. It will have to be a few years used of course, since new ones are now $90k.

Also from everything you've said there is a non zero chance that you are my FIL and now I'm kinda hoping for a new blazer bay to pop up in my drive

The $30k boat of 5 years ago is now the $40k boat, and the $30k boat of 10 years ago is now the $50k boat. If you take him shopping don't be surprised by that. Putting 30k toward something would open up his options a lot.

Regular Ranger RT188 starts around $38k these days.

Budget $30k, ideally including trailer & motor.

Are you taking applications for another son-in-law by chance?

Any chance you could talk to one of his fishing buddies as I’m sure they have discussed what boat he likes, also as someone else said the motor is very important to get right. Lots of loyalties when discussing brands. I’ve owned 2 Mercs and 1 Yamaha and doing it over I would want a Yamaha.

She graduated college in 3yrs (HS earned 1 year of credits) and landed great job. She was funding her 401k 15% of her salary her wound-be Sr year. She has been raised on the ways of personal finance.

You are not wrong! But it’s time for some fun.

Thanks for all the inputs! Much appreciated.

I had a feeling $30k is not much. Starting to think north of $40k is way to go.

TX boat tips, shop together and present the boat, warning on SIL no longer SIL, specific boat brands and features…all appreciated.

Let me take into consideration. Really thank each of you!

Mine invited us to dinner and asked how we were going to split the check when they brought it. Not all are created equal.
