Jack Montoucet, a former state legislator who leads the agency, said the increases are needed to offset a wide range of financial problems, including the loss of $65 million since 2009 because of state budget problems.

Montoucet said the plan, the first of its kind since 2000, would also trim the number of licenses from 117 to 30 and bring charges in line with neighboring states.

quote:

Under Montoucet's proposal, the cost of a basic fishing license for residents would rise from $9.50 to $13.50 for a year. A basic hunting license would go up from $15 to $20.

quote:

Under current rules, freshwater fishermen can get six different licenses, including basic, $9.50; recreational wire nets, $20 and crawfish traps, $15.

Under the proposal, those and others would be listed as a single basic fishing license, $13.50.

Youngsters would be required to have a $5 license if they hunt deer, turkey or take part in any department youth lottery hunt.

A lifetime hunting and fishing license would cost $1,000 for residents and $5,000 for non-residents.

Crab trap fishermen now have three options for a license: basic, $9.50, crab trap license, $15 and saltwater fishing license, $13.

Those would be replaced by a stand alone crab license – $5.

quote:

The charge for a "Sportsman's Paradise" license, which covers hunting and fishing charges, would drop to $90 per year from $100.

Montoucet said that, if the proposed recreational fee hikes win approval, he will seek higher charges for commercial fishing in 2019.

I've been buying the Sportsman Paradise License for the last four years now. It's the best bargain if you hunt and fish also crawfish and crab with traps.

I want to buy my son a lifetime and have to wait 6 months to become a resident once I move back to La, but I won’t be back in La until July. Any idea of when the increases may occur?

He says in the link that it will be an uphill battle to get the increases.

Well, I definitely agree with this.

I typically am against most new fees/taxes/increases, but I'm for this. No increases in 18 years is more than you can ask for.

This money helps funds the agency that protects the animals that we enjoy, I'm good with it costing a little more.

The article on. LSM does a pretty good job of breaking it down.

Lots of lifetime licenses about to be sold.

Truth. I may hunt once every two or three years. I fish 3-5 times a year. I’m buying one now.

I bought my lifetime license over 20 years ago and my kids’ when he was born. But I figured one day the lifetime license “value” caught on that the state would start to see a decrease in license sales and have to do something.

I guess the time has come.

When you read 42% you think it’s going to be a huge increase. Other than lifetime licenses it really isn’t. I think we need to continue to have excellent public land opportunities. If this funding helps with that I’m all for it!

Signed the guy who’s entire family has a lifetime license already.....

Agree with this take. It costs money for the dept to help run the state and fund conservation and other stuff, it’s a small price to pay.

Just for reference: a super combo here in Texas which lets you do everything hunting and fishing related except waterfowl hunting ($28 more for the stamp), costs $68 a year. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things and something you get to use for a full year.

LA would switch to this system like every other state. Its dumb that some people have to buy a fishing license that's only good for a few months if they buy it for the spring. Luckily I have a lifetime license.

According to the LA Sportsman article senior licenses would begin at 65 instead of 60 and would be half the price of normal licenses not $5 anymore.

He’s throwing a big number out there, hoping to get a fraction of that after it’s all said and done.

I’m against any new tax or tax increase though, regardless of what it’s for or where it’s going.

I need to get both of my kids lifetime licenses as soon as I can. Does anyone know how that is working with the current interruption in buying La licenses with the system upgrade?

I agree, most of the time. But the ldwf budget doesn't come from the general fund they run off of license sales.

Out of all the places our money goes, I can get behind this more than any other. 18 years without an increase is incredible.

The increases aren't world changing money. In the scope of things, licenses are the least expensive thing you buy. If you don't like it, buy a lifetime, they are a bargain.
