Why is Lake Maurepas not more heavily hunted and fished?

I’ve never heard of anyone going there to hunt or fish. I looked it up online and apparently it’s not a very popular destination.

Anyone know why? It seems like a large untouched freshwater lake would be an absolute haven for freshwater fishing and duck hunting.

Why though? Lol

What makes that lake such a bad place to hunt or fish?

It’s definitely freshwater.

You might be getting it confused with Lake Ponchartrain or something.

There was an explosion on a concrete tank barge in the middle of Maurepas in the mid ‘80s that killed two or three contract laborers instantly, ignition of flammable vapors in a confined space.

The coroner reportedly found two teeth.

Maybe around Spring of ‘87, if memory serves.

Also, Maurepas was a big deal in France.

That’s some tough arse deer hunting.

No food for the ducks.

Fishing is pretty popular though.

1. it is very shallow - at its deepest is only 12 feet
2. it has three tributaries so it is full of mud, water clarity is terrible
3. it is relatively small so it has a pretty good current in it
4. it is shallow, so any wind makes it choppy as frick

I’ve fished it a couple of times. Soso results. Rather fish other places where I’ve caught more fish.

Fishing in the lake is shite. Hunting almost impossible without a boat…but there are plenty deer out there…ducks too.

The Ida fish kill did a number but it’s coming back on the rivers.

The water in the lake is relatively shallow making it a place you don't want to be if the wing kicks up-that lake gets rough as hell quickly. The fishing in Pass Manchac and Lake Ponchartrain is better than in Maurepas.
I figure if either hunting or fishing in Maurepas was good people would be doing it.

It is a brackish tidal estuary. Its salinity varies due to tidal action and water ingress from Ponchartrain.

You just copy and pasted that from Google, didn’t you?

Perhaps there is technically some interchange with Lake Ponchartrain through Pass Manchac wich makes it technically a brackish estuary, but no one is going to catch redfish, speckled trout, or any other saltwater fish in Lake Maurepas.

Just had a camp on the Diversion for over 20 years and spent god knows how much time on Maurepas. It is a brackish tidal estuary due to the tides. I got schooled on the tides and Maurepas early on when I voiced I didn't think the tides could impact water levels on the canal.
