Have a Thermal ordered, should be here hopefully early next week.
I’m debating what I want to put it on.
The there is the IRay Bolt TL50.
Shots will be less that 250yds

Have 2 ARs I’m considering.

5.56 or 6.5 grendel?
No hogs. Will only hunt bobcats and coyotes.

Either caliber would work but for straight up killing shite I would go 6.5 Grendel. I personally have one on a 6mm ARC and it does quite well. Only went with that caliber because I reload and have more bullet options to choose from.

I would go 223 cheap and easy to get more bullets. If I’m shooting hogs and yotes I want to go ham and shoot till I can’t see anything else to shoot at!!

bobcats

I went to take the trash out in Scottsdale at the wife's house and a bobcat was staring at me when I opened the back door.

Fuker wasn't scared of me. At. All.

I went back in to get my pistol, and my sweet wife says, " you can't shoot them, they're endangered ".

I said, " he damn sure is now".

The bias in me wants to say 6.5 Grendel because I love that caliber, but the 5.56 is plenty of gun for what you describe, and the ammo is cheaper

Agree with this 100%.

To the OP… I have both and for an overall round with more versatility, the 6.5 Grendel is the best option. However, for what you are wanting to do, the 5.56 is more than enough and the ammo is both cheaper and more plentiful.

For the animals listed, 5.56/.223 all day. For larger game, either 6.5 or 6.8. The same dynamic exists between these two calibers as the creedmore and 7-08. One's better ballistics lends itself to also being a great long range target round, where the other makes a slightly larger hole to let more red stuff out.

I purchased a Gen 3 AR10 .308 upper and lower today from PSA. It matches right up and it’s only $670. I have an AGM thermal I plan to install on it.

I found brass ammo 147 grains (with good reviews) for .75 cents per round (after tax and shipping). That’s almost 3 times the grains of the 5.56 round, for .15 cents more per round, after tax and shipping

I’ve been leaning 5.56.

I will also say that I reload both. The Grendel is dialed in. .5” grouping at 100 yds.

I have some work to do with the 5.56. I’ve never tried to develop a load in it. If that’s the direction I go, I’ll work something up. Will probably go with heavier bullets and see how it does.

Another thing I’m considering is the weight of both. The 5.56 is a Radian rifle and it weighs a 2-3 lbs more than the grendel.

I may look for another one at some point.

This will shoot flatter and have a more precise MPBR. Though it will have less energy than the Grendel and will lose energy more quickly, it matters not, as you don’t need much energy to cleanly take those animals you mentioned.

If the targets ever become larger and tougher, move it to your Grendel.

Not that there is much recoil in the first place, but your 5.56 must have zero recoil with all that weight.

Just out of curiosity how much does your Grendel weigh? Mine is currently in a DMR build and is 10.5 pounds.

5.56. I’ve bounced my thermal between 5.56, 300blk, .308, etc. and it’s been on 5.56 for awhile

For coyotes and bobcats try the 53gr vmax.

ETA: My thermal is 14.5lbs with a 10rd mag and can. Get a good arca Swiss mount for a decent tripod and it’ll make life a lot easier. It’s extremely easy to sling the gun and tripod over your shoulder and carry it that way. Weight doesn’t matter at that point.

It’s pretty light. 7-8 lbs I’d guess.

I’ll weigh it and post if I remember.

5.56 that's what I run and it smashes coyotes and pigs. Right ammo is key. I came from the 6.5G to the 5.56. The 5.56 is easier target acquisition due to less recoil. Cheaper ammo when you shoot 2k rounds a year like I do.

I'm at 390 pigs and 81 coyotes this year so i have a pretty large sample size. Killed these yotes this week 50-300yd shots

5.56 with an 18"-20" suppressed pipe dialed-in balanced and blueprinted.

NVDs are for one thing ... owning the night. Might as well be able to reach out and touch something from at least a half a klick away in the pitch black dark.

5.56 in 75, 77 grains is all you need to deliver multiple send its, suppressed in the dark ... and then E & E or whatever, didi mao.

Readily available is importanté.

What kind of set-up do you have re: your rifle/thermal, etc? Also, what ammo are you using majority of the time?
