where were you and what was you shooting??

I'll go first since I started this thread. For me, it was the mid 90's when I shot the Winston P. Wilson match in Arkansas, with an M16A1.... and open iron sights. Longest range was day 1.... 600yds. Was an outstanding experience!

I’ve never shot at a target further than 200 yards. The one time I did I think I shot a couple shots and that was it. I’ve killed critters over that but most of my shooting has been at 100 yards.

To cool thing about a 600yd shot is you can see the bullet trail and know whether you hit or missed before having them pull the target. Pretty fricking awesome!

Open sights i’ve never shot more than maybe 250 yds.

My Pop shot for the All-Army rifle team back in the 60’s. Won several 600 m and several 1,000 m comps in Service Rifle class ( Open sights) to the dismay of many Marine Corps and FBI shooters.

500yd M1 garand.
I was at the range shooting my scoped rifle and an older guy with a vet hat was there with a garand and he asked me if I had ever shot one. I told him I was young enough enough to be his son and no but I didn’t want to shoot his bullets. He told me I had to try it so I did. It was already adjusted for the 500 plate and he had just rang it so I got behind it and rang the plate, I kind of got a chub ol man was grinning ear to ear as if I had just smoked a commie.

got a doe at about 90 yards with a Winchester 30-30. Skinner peep sight. Furthest I'd shot at targets before that was 75 yards.

Ended up putting a scope on it afterwards.

285 yards with the jammaster 30-06 on a gasline when I was around 12yrs old. It was my 1st racked buck.

200 yards with M1 Garand. Iron peep sights. 100 rounds at this distance in an informal Garand contest.

Around 230 yards with M1 garand, I think. Longest one I can remember right now.

They got the sights right on those rifles. Man those are some nice irons to use.

Sprite can sitting on top of a fence post 100 yards away with an open sight .22. I felt like John Wayne that day, my friends.

Longest shot ever attempted and hit was 300 meters, M16A2, military ammo, sometime in the 1990s. At a certain point, I stopped shooting at 300 and saved those rounds for the 200 and 250 misses.

Pretty much the same for me. Used to set up the clays that I could find by the camp pond that didn't break from skeet shooting and pull out the 10/22 on the camp porch when I was bored. Maybe 125 yds. Outside of that, I've never really had any guns without optics on them.

Not the longest open sight shot, but most impressive was a cowbird at 72 steps with a red rider bb gun. Dad stepped it off.

Full disclosure, that was about the 90th BB I'd shot that day.

I don't shoot rifles with iron sight ever. I have one in a 30/30 but I haven't shot that gun in a very long time.

I will shoot .22 pistol at my place quite often at 100-150yds.
My target is a 12x18" (I think that's what it is) plate.

Depending on the pistol, I will hit it 10-20% of the time.

That's about it.

The unfortunate thing about iron sights is how well they work depends a wholeeeeeeee lot on the eyeballs operating them.

The only time I prefer them to a scope is in the rain and very little danger of a shot past 100 yards. I've never felt handicapped by a scope, even at 10 yards. Its just so much easier.
