I’m trying to burn mine up and mostly be done.
Currently
Elk - Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado- double digits in all states
Mule Deer - Wyoming, Colorado
Antelope - Wyoming, Colorado
Iowa - Deer - son and I both have five points

Drew Mule Deer in Nevada and no longer apply
Drew Idaho California Bighorn
Drew New Mexico Elk
Drawn multiple times in Kansas

The points game ain’t what it used to be, but there isn’t much choice if you want to hunt the West.

Sorry, a little ignorant of me lol but please explain like I'm 5. Are these lottery hunts to be able to hunt in those states? Or just hunt certain species in those states?

About 25 years ago, many Western states went to a points system where you earned a point for every year you entered a hunt draw for a specific species in that state. You could also apply for points only in most states f you didn’t want to hunt that year, but wanted to plan in the future.
Now we have what is known as “point creep”. There aren’t enough hunt’s available for all the points out there. Initially, you could draw many great tags for just a few points. Now, a hunter needs to be in double digits to hunt a slightly above average elk unit in Colorado as a non resident. Basically, you fall further behind each year. The systems suck for younger hunters with dreams of hunting out West DIY.

Thanks for explaining that to me. Never thought of it that way. Figured you knew someone or hired a guide, or got your licenses for out of state and hit the public land.

Think of it as a long term investment in your hunting career. There are ways to shortcut the point system, but it’ll cost a lot of money. For the DIY hunter, the points system is the best way.
There’s a bit of an underground network amongst non resident DIY hunters. We know that once we draw the tag, we’ll never be able to hunt that unit again. So non residents are more willing to share intel with a hunter who just drew the tag. You’re miles ahead when someone drops a pin on a glassing spot or camp site for you.

That sounds sort of like what I was picking up on with the interaction in the thread. That is awesome. Thanks for the lesson there.
