It's a 1200 SQ ft shot gun in Mid-City. Contractor says I need a 3-ton unit outside with a 1-ton "return" in the inside.

What should I expect to pay.

TIA

You may get more responses posting in O-T Lounge.

I have no idea what a 1 ton return is.

I'm in the the business and have no idea what you mean by 1 ton return

Prices can vary a lot with equipment and seer rating but I'll give it a shot.

Low end made in China crap that will give you problems in 4 years = $4000

High end high efficiency trane equipment that will get you a easy 15 years may be over $10,000

I had to replace the system in my vacation house which is 1000 sq ft, two story. It was $4500. I think it was as 3 ton system. The Seer rating is important.

Around $1400/ton for a good system inside and outside tonnage should match

In march 2016 I replaced a 2 ton mid grade unit for $4000 check, it was like $4300 with CC. Probably add $800-1000 for an additional ton.

You need to call around to at least 4 if not 5-6+ people to get quotes. I'm not kidding, I got quotes from that $4300 to $6000 and mostly for the same systems.

Appreciate the responses. Was checking for a friend that is replacing the AC in two shot guns that make up a duplex that she owns. The ducts don't need replacing, just the inside and outside units.

I put the "return" in quotes because I figured she misheard that.

She's received 3 quotes and the fella today had a mutual friend with her and wanted to know her lowest bid so far, which is $9700 for replacing all units and duct work

I really have no idea what a "1-ton return" means...so you should probably check into that.

also, the quality of the installation makes a ton of difference, so chose someone who is going to do a decent job.

gotta also figure out how much work they will have to do in order to come up with what is a fair price. a few things that make a lot of difference:

- is the evaporator unit in the attic or in a closet.

- if in the attic, will the unit fit through the entry?

- will ductwork need replacing?

- is the copper reusable?

I know you don't have the answers to all of these questions, but that is why a firm quote is difficult.

Just had a crappy 11 yo Goodman replaced in April. 3 ton Rheem 16 seer outside and air handler, all new copper piping and no duct work was 4700.

Don't allow whoever told you this to do any work for you. If you have a 3-ton condenser, you should have a 3 ton air handler.

No way in hell a 3ton Trane would run 10k.

I had a 2ton Trane completely new system and new ducts installed for $4,200. Granted it wasn't a heat pump.

OP, get more quotes. Trane/American Standard is the cream of the crop but others are okay if installed properly.

Big difference between 14 seer single stage and 20 seer variable speed. But I'm sure you know more than someone who does this for a living.

I know a 3-ton Goodman 14 seer heat pump and air handler is roughly $2000. That is just equipment, not installed.

What about a 5 ton unit without replacing duct work? The guy that came out today didn't even buy me dinner and tried to bend me over. But he was with a company. I've got some friends giving me names to get a few more quotes.
