XM855 green tip. I have several large ammo boxes full. I have some 75gr OTM's I rolled myself but see no reason to use them over stuff I have well over 100 lbs of.

Black Hills 77gr TMK. Generally keep 1k of them, and however many I want of a clone I worked up.

The potential problem with 55 or 62gr FMJ is that it's inconsistent

I’m sure I’ll kick the hornets nest with this, but I’m fairly certain it’s not recommended to use FMJ for home defense because it’s more likely to go through Sheetrock? Most self defense is not going to be like the movies where you shoot someone behind a door or behind a wall, so the idea is that you don’t want your bullets going through your home walls toward your family or neighbors?

Given that, as others have said I think we are likely over thinking any self defense round.

There have been a LOT of experiments on this topic and people shooting all sorts of calibers and shot size through drywall. The bottom line is that penetration is penetration and drywall offers little resistance. A round that will go through 12" of human will go through walls, no matter what caliber, no matter if it's a FMJ or hollow point, so you need to be aware of your home's layout.

M855 with every 3rd round being a tracer round added in. That's my night load. My day load is M855 all throughout

I thought this was generally accepted to be a poor performer as far as self defense rounds go?

All of you who are using 77gr TMK loads, yall should read the rokslide forum thread ".223 for deer elk bear moose." Those guys are building a compeling case that the 77gr TMK is an absolutely spectacular performer.

I'm not quite sure. The AR isn't my self defense weapon. I have a tactical shotgun that does that job

I have an AR-10 with 5 mags full of a bunch of .308 rounds my dad reloaded. I really don't know what grain projectile or how much powder, as he used to tinker around with all kinds of loads.

In a home defense situation, I wouldn't be using it anyway, I'd go for the 9mm or .357 in the nightstand.

I thought that the tip was mainly for ballistics/accuracy. OTMK have always had good terminal performance; is there much of a difference between them and the TMK?

Is it?

I'd argue that either will be an outstanding HDW. Both have an equal list of pro vs cons.

My HDW is an AR with a silencer.
