I'm in the timber bidness and I counldn't tell you the difference in a Nutall and a Shumard.

Quercus shumardii
Shumard
Looks a lot like a northern red oak.

Stay away from water oaks, but if you find a cow oak (Swamp Chestnut Oak) you're on to something

I was and couldn't most of the time. Only thing I figured was that Nuttall had more lobes and bigger acorns, but I have no flipping idea. Same tree IMHO

Yup. Shumard red oaks are marketed as fast growing.

Deer like there acorns?

Judging by the pic of the acorns, my guess is Shumard Oak. Yes, Red Oak family, fast growing, big and plentiful acorns.
Nuttall oak looks similar as far as tree shape and leaf shape/size. But acorns are a tad smaller and taper more. Nuttall's grow pretty fast too.
I planted about 30 of each at the hunting camp a couple weeks ago. By the time my son is in his 20's he should have bountiful crops of acorns for most of the season.

Yard trees don't count for my generalization. I don't care about them usually. I don't do many wetland delineations in neighborhoods.
I know where 2 shumards are on my 100 acre lease. They are 20 yards apart. When they have acorns, there's usually blood around the tree around November 7.

I have (what I think) are two pin oaks in my yard. They don't loose their leaves until spring.

Maybe a Scarlet Oak. Know where some are that are part of a landscape planting. They are heavy producers. Acorns and leaves look similar.
